Goodbye "The Village Ghost"

The news of director Nguyen Huu Phan's death this afternoon shocked many people.

Screenwriter Trinh Thanh Nha shared that director Nguyen Huu Phan's long-time friends often call him by the simple name "Phan" or "Phan Ma Lang".

Ms. Nha said the two met and became close friends nearly 40 years ago, when they joined the Vietnam Feature Film Studio at 4 Thuy Khue (Hanoi) with many hopes and aspirations.

After that, Nguyen Huu Phan and a number of directors joined the Vietnam Television Film Center (VFC), which at that time had just started the Weekend Arts program.

Very quickly, those who left 4 Thuy Khue became the core force of VFC, producing one-episode films, then many episodes... and director Nguyen Huu Phan was one of the people who created that brand.

"When we knew that Phan turned into and then attached to the rural theme, we were a bit surprised, so we followed his films very closely and were completely convinced," said screenwriter Trinh Thanh Nha.

Hearing the news that the director had just "passed away", she was still speechless, although there was no surprise at all. "I just hoped that he would be hospitalized and then discharged like many times before," she said.

"Well... everyone has a way to leave. It's an inevitable law. I hope you are at peace, free from all worries and pain. Goodbye, People's Artist Nguyen Huu Phan. Go in peace," Ms. Nha expressed.

A person of deep insight and passion for change

Director Phi Tien Son told Tuoi Tre Online that he and director Nguyen Huu Phan were very close, so when he heard the news that his "older brother" had passed away this afternoon, he was in shock and still in shock.

Phi Tien Son said he was the one who filmed director Nguyen Huu Phan's first film: The Last Sin .

Around 1992, a number of young directors passionate about Vietnamese cinema such as Nguyen Huu Phan, Luu Trong Ninh, Phi Tien Son, Hoang Nhuan Cam... realized that our country's cinema needed to change, both in content and production process.

With the sponsorship and support of the leaders of the Vietnam Cinema Association, the Young Cinema Center was born.

Because young directors at that time had so few opportunities to make films, they decided to make independent films.

Do You Still Remember or Have You Forgotten - a film written by People's Artist Nguyen Huu Phan and co-directed with Phi Tien Son - inspired by a series of famous songs by musician Trinh Cong Son - was released soon after. The film stars Le Cong Tuan Anh and Truong Ngoc Anh.

"At that time, we rarely had musical films, and that kind of romanticism was not common in Vietnamese cinema. That showed our desire to change, renew ourselves, and contribute to Vietnamese cinema," Mr. Son recalled.

Talking about his "older brother", director Phi Tien Son said that director Nguyen Huu Phan started out as a literature teacher, so he has a lot of knowledge about literature, and his way of making films is therefore more profound than others.

In addition, in the eyes of his brothers and friends, he is an active and enterprising person. In recent years, despite his age, the director still writes books and teaches his craft to young directors.

After leaving Vietnam Feature Film Studio, Nguyen Huu Phan moved to VFC, from where he produced many famous films about the countryside.

Phi Tien Son said Nguyen Huu Phan's films are profound and vivid, "when talking about films about the countryside, people cannot help but mention Phan".

Director Nguyen Huu Phan was born in 1948 in Hung Yen, one of the first students of the University of Theatre and Cinema.

He is the director of many famous films such as the movie Do you still remember or have you forgotten and TV series on VFC such as Ma lang , Dat va nguoi , Gio lang Kinh, Lang ma 10 nam sau ...

Director Nguyen Huu Phan was awarded the title of People's Artist in 2015.
