On May 22, director Nguyen Huu Phan's daughter shared with VTC News reporters that he passed away at the age of 76. This news made the audience who loved director Nguyen Huu Phan and his works feel regretful.

From literature teacher to director

Director Nguyen Huu Phan was born in 1948 in Hanoi. He graduated from Hanoi Pedagogical University and became a literature teacher. When he was still alive, the director once shared that one time he visited his close friend who was working at the Feature Film Studio and he was attracted by the film production job.

Nguyen Huu Phan decided to quit his teaching job and move into filmmaking as a secretary for directors Pham Van Khoa, Bac Xuyen, Nguyen Ngoc Chung, and Tran Vu.

In 1979, Nguyen Huu Phan, along with Khai Hung, Do Minh Tuan, and Vu Chau, became students of the first course of the University of Theatre and Cinema. In 1992, he, along with Luu Trong Ninh, Hoang Nhuan Cam, and Phi Tien Son, founded the Youth Cinema Center under the auspices of the Vietnam Cinema Association.

Also in 1992, he produced the film Do You Still Remember or Have You Forgotten and promoted it to all provinces and cities across the country. The film was inspired by 11 songs composed by musician Trinh Cong Son, revolving around soldier Quang Son and his passion for music.

The main characters in the film are all fictional, only borrowing the images of Trinh Cong Son, Khanh Ly, Diem... The film brings together a cast of famous actors at that time: Le Cong Tuan Anh (as Quang Son), Truong Ngoc Anh (as Diem), Hoang Hong Nhi (as Huyen My)...

The film was a huge success with four Silver Lotus awards and awards for Best Actor, Music and Screenplay.

In 1994, director Nguyen Huu Phan was invited by director Khai Hung to the Vietnam Television Film Studio. How could he forget that the first film of the Sunday Arts program was directed by Huu Phan. In 1996, he continued to release the film Hue's Life Pieces, which resonated with the audience.

“Mr. Rural Part” and classic works about the countryside

Since 2000, director Nguyen Huu Phan has made many films about rural themes: Land and People , Village Ghosts, Kinh Village Wind, Ghost Village 10 Years Later...

Among the works on rural themes directed by Nguyen Huu Phan, many films have left a deep impression on the audience. In particular, the films Land and People and Village Ghosts also brought him the Best Director award at the Kite Awards in 2002 and 2007.

At the 28th National Television Festival (2009), the film Wind of Kinh Village was honored with the Golden Prize of the Festival.

Sharing on Dan Viet, director Nguyen Huu Phan revealed that he chose the rural theme to exploit because it could help him serve a large audience: “In Vietnam, the countryside is one of the places where conflicts about family, clan, land, power are most concentrated… If we study it and exploit such current situations in the countryside correctly, we will have a film genre that serves nearly 70% of the rural population, while reflecting their moods and thoughts.”

Two of the works by director Nguyen Huu Phan about the countryside that have left the strongest impression on audiences are Ma Lang, Dat and Nguoi i. The male director once shared that after Ma Lang was broadcast, a tycoon living in the South contacted the film crew and gave money to everyone for a party. This tycoon said that the film revived his memories of many years of wandering and hardship in the countryside.

Meanwhile, many viewers shared with the director that they wanted to watch Land and People with their children so that they could understand more about rural life: “Another viewer confided in me that they wanted to sit with their children and watch Land and People to show them what the fields are like, what the buffaloes are like… I think that even city people nowadays almost all come from the countryside. Therefore, I want to make a film that hits their psychology and emotions.”

In 2015, for his contributions to the country's cinema, director Nguyen Huu Phan was awarded the title of People's Artist. In addition to being a director, he is also a lecturer at the directing class at the University of Theatre and Cinema and a member of the National Film Censorship Council.
