On the morning of March 6 in Hanoi, within the framework of the Vietship 2025 Exhibition, a seminar on “Green transformation in the maritime industry and offshore wind power: Vietnam's development potential” took place.
The workshop attracted the participation of state management agencies such as the Institute of Transport Strategy of the Ministry of Construction, Vietnam Maritime Administration and Inland Waterways, Vietnam Register, international registration agencies and many representatives from many leading domestic and international enterprises in the shipbuilding, maritime, offshore construction industries, etc., providing in-depth information and valuable contributions. The workshop focused on discussing the potential, challenges and sustainable development orientation for Vietnam's maritime and renewable energy industries in the context of the global trend towards emission reduction and green technology application.
Head of VIMC Maritime Transport Department Hoang Long speaks at the conference
Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) participated in the workshop with a presentation on “Current situation and investment plan to rejuvenate the fleet of Vietnam National Shipping Lines”, led by Deputy General Director Nguyen Ngoc Anh and the representative speaker was Mr. Hoang Long - Head of Maritime Transport Department. In his presentation, Mr. Hoang Long stated that VIMC's current fleet is facing many challenges, including an old fleet, lack of large tonnage vessels, specialized container ships, low operating efficiency and limited competitiveness. These limitations not only affect business efficiency but also pose challenges in meeting increasingly stringent environmental standards of the International Convention and regulations of port authorities in countries. To overcome this, VIMC has proposed a strategy to develop a new generation fleet, meeting green standards and saving fuel in the near future.
The focus of the plan is to invest in new generation ships designed with advanced technology, minimizing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the green transformation trend of the global maritime industry. The workshop also focused on the potential for offshore wind power development in Vietnam. At the same time, through his speech, Head of the Maritime Transport Department Hoang Long also expressed his view that Vietnam National Shipping Lines always wishes to expand deeper cooperation with leading organizations, partners and enterprises in Vietnam and internationally in areas such as shipbuilding and repair, fleet development and market expansion.
Delegates at the workshop shared international experiences in green transformation in the maritime industry. Notably, the world's largest container shipping line Maersk launched its first green methanol-powered container ship in 2023, seven years earlier than expected. This shows that the green transformation trend is taking place strongly and Vietnamese businesses need to adapt quickly to avoid being left behind. The workshop created an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange information, experience and propose solutions to promote green transformation in the maritime industry and develop offshore wind power in Vietnam. The active participation of VIMC and other businesses shows the determination and commitment to sustainable development, contributing to enhancing Vietnam's position on the global maritime and renewable energy map.
