A recent report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that by the end of September this year, our country's durian output had reached 984,800 tons, a sharp increase of 16.6% over the same period last year.
Meanwhile, October is the harvest season for this “king of fruits” in large-production growing areas such as Gia Lai and Lam Dong. Off-season durian in the western provinces will also be harvested in the last months of this year.
It is estimated that our country's durian output could reach over 1.2 million tons this year.
Accordingly, in addition to serving domestic consumption needs, a large amount of durian is also exported to China, Thailand and other markets.
Preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association show that in the past 9 months, our country’s durian export turnover is estimated at 2.5 billion USD – a historical record. Of which, exports to the Chinese market alone are estimated at about 2.3 billion USD.
But on the other hand, our country also spent nearly 9 million USD to import durian in the first 8 months of 2024. Compared to the same period last year, the import turnover of this item increased dramatically by 1,057%, or nearly 11.6 times.
In fact, in the domestic market, Vietnamese durian is sold everywhere. Besides, in stores, there are also many imported durian varieties from Thailand and Malaysia with very expensive prices.
For example, Fumoni durian costs 200,000-340,000 VND/kg, Kanyao durian costs from 430,000-700,000 VND/kg, Black Thorn durian costs from 900,000 VND to 1 million VND/kg; Musang King costs 650,000-900,000 VND/kg. Some other types of imported durian are commonly priced in the range of 400,000-500,000 VND/kg.
Imported durian dealers said that the price of each type of durian depends on whether it is grade 1 or grade 2. In addition, the price of durian transported by plane will be more expensive than by road and sea. Because the shorter the transportation time, the fresher the durian.
Breaking the record of last year, the 'king fruit' is soaring to the top of history . Hundreds of millions of Chinese people are crazy about durian, spending billions of dollars each year to buy it. Meanwhile, Vietnam has made a fortune thanks to exports, with revenue from selling the "king fruit" in 9 months estimated at 2.5 billion USD - an unprecedented record in history.
