Swiss President Viola Amherd assessed Vietnam as a leading and priority economic partner of this country in the ASEAN region.
This comment was made by Swiss President Viola Amherd when meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos 2024, on January 17, in Davos, Switzerland.
According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, about 140 leading Swiss enterprises have invested in Vietnam, with a total capital of 2 billion USD. Ms. Viola Amherd assessed Vietnam as the country's top priority and important economic partner in Southeast Asia.
In addition, Switzerland is currently one of the countries providing preferential ODA loans, with more than 40 projects being implemented in many fields, such as education and sustainable development. These development loans, according to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, have contributed to supporting Vietnam in achieving many socio-economic development achievements. He also hopes that more businesses from this country will invest in Vietnam, especially in the fields of innovation, science and technology.
In response, Swiss President Viola Amherd pledged to continue providing ODA aid to Vietnam, including sharing experience in business development and innovation.
The two leaders also agreed to have a flexible approach in negotiating agreements such as the Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, the European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) and the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement. This is to facilitate and ensure the interests of businesses and investors of both countries.

Meeting with UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebecca Grynspan on the same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated UNCTAD’s role in advising and supporting the development of policies. He suggested that the organization continue to help Vietnam train human resources and create conditions for recruiting more Vietnamese experts to work at the UNCTAD Secretariat.
Ms. Rebeca Grynspan said she was impressed and considered "Vietnam a model of development, confidence and optimism in the current volatile world situation".
From January 16 to 18, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. The WEF usually attracts the participation of most leaders of countries, international organizations as well as the world's leading corporations and companies.
Vietnam and WEF have had relations since 1989. WEF often invites Vietnam to attend annual conferences in Davos and WEF conferences on East Asia.
