Speaking at the recent Australia - Vietnam Tourism Forum, Ms. Martine Letts, CEO of AsiaLink, said that Vietnam is a valuable partner of the Australian tourism industry.
Ms. Martine Letts said that Vietnam is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the region with a growth rate of 8% in 2022 and about 5% in 2023 and 2024. In addition, Vietnam's population has reached more than 100 million people, of which the middle class is expanding, causing increased consumer demand, including overseas travel. This is an ideal condition for Australia to attract tourists from Vietnam.
“Vietnam’s strong business and education ties, large Vietnamese community in Australia, increasing air connectivity, geographical proximity and impressive economic growth are all converging to make the country a growing and increasingly accessible destination. With a projected population of 104 million by 2030 and a consumer class of around 20 million, there is no denying that Vietnam is a potential tourism market,” said Ms Martine Letts.
Statistics from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism show that in 2023, there will be about 150,000 Vietnamese visitors to Australia, an increase of 50% compared to the previous year. According to Ms. Martine Letts, if Australia pays more attention to developing tourism products suitable for Vietnamese visitors, the number of Vietnamese visitors to this country will continue to increase in the coming time.
Vietnam is not only a potential source of visitors but also an interesting tourist destination for many Australians. Vietnam's tourism industry is recovering from the pandemic and stepping up its efforts to attract foreign visitors. In the first 5 months of this year, the number of foreign tourists to Vietnam reached 7.6 million, an increase of 65% compared to the same period in 2023.
Ms Maritne Letts said that 70% of Australian tourists are looking for sustainable tourism services while ecotourism in Vietnam is also growing, so Vietnam could become an attractive destination for Australian tourists. “Vietnam’s rich natural heritage, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, pristine beaches, vast mountains and rice paddies, and national parks, Vietnam’s biodiversity creates the perfect setting for ecotourism. Cultural sustainability and respect for local communities are also important factors. Homestays have allowed Australian tourists to immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture while supporting the local economy. The growth of ecotourism services in Vietnam fits the trend of experiential, sustainable tourism among Australian tourists.”
According to Ms. Martine Letts, to exploit the potential of Vietnamese tourists, Australia should invest more in market research and develop unique tourism products that suit the needs of Vietnamese tourists. Regarding Vietnam, Ms. Maritine Letts said that Vietnam also needs to promote many new tourism products, in addition to famous destinations. Besides, Vietnam has strengths in eco-tourism, so according to Ms. Martine Letts, Vietnam should also have many tourism products in this field specifically for Australian tourists.
Vietnam and Australia are two countries with great potential in the tourism industry. In the context of the favorable development of bilateral relations, the tourism industries of the two countries need to take advantage of this opportunity and adjust their strategies to increase the attractiveness of the market, thereby encouraging tourists to travel between the two countries.
