Immediately after the incident, rescue forces launched a large-scale search operation that lasted 17 hours. The rescue team included divers, sniffer dogs and manual diggers searching for victims in the sinkhole.
At 1:37 a.m. on March 25, they found a mobile phone believed to belong to the motorcyclist. Two hours later, the victim’s motorbike was discovered about 30 meters from the center of the sinkhole.
At 11:22 a.m. the same day, the body of a man in his 30s was found about 50 meters from the center of the pit, buried at a depth of about 90 centimeters. When found, the victim was still wearing a helmet and motorcycle boots, indicating that he may have been dragged far away by the landslide.
Due to safety concerns, the government ordered the closure of four schools in the area, including Seoul Daemyeong Elementary School, Hanyoung Middle and High School, and Hanyoung Foreign Language High School. Some schools announced water and gas cuts, affecting students' daily activities, especially the use of restrooms and cafeterias.
The sinkhole appeared near a subway extension project, raising suspicions about a connection between the project and the sinkhole. Seoul authorities said a number of factors could have contributed to the incident, including nearby construction activity.
Authorities are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause. A team of experts will be mobilized to assess the extent of the impact and find solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
