In the summer, if Moc Chau has plum picking experience, Bac Giang also has lychee picking experience and enjoying it in the garden.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuong (22 years old) and her friends rode their motorbikes for about two hours from Hanoi to pick lychees in a garden in Dong Giao village, Quy Son commune, Luc Ngan district. It was the first time Thuong had the chance to admire a large lychee garden of about 5 hectares, with lychee trees 5-10 m high, with raspberry-shaped canopies, planted in rows. The lychee trees have many leaves so the fruit is not clearly visible from afar. But when getting closer, the lychee clusters were almost all ripe. Some branches were so heavy that they had to use a stick to keep the fruit from touching the ground, to avoid rotting and spoiling.
Luc Ngan and Tan Yen are two key lychee growing districts of the "lychee capital" of nearly 30,000 hectares of Bac Giang. In April 2023, the Asia Record Organization recognized Luc Ngan lychee as a Vietnamese specialty that achieved an Asian record according to the criteria of Asian culinary value. Coming to Luc Ngan district, visitors can easily see the neatly planned, undulating lychee hills. Every year, at this time, the roads in Luc Ngan are dyed red by trucks carrying harvested lychees.

Lychee garden tourism is promoted by Bac Giang province to promote and consume lychees. Currently, Luc Ngan district has more than 200 cooperatives growing lychees, welcoming visitors, providing food, accommodation, and entertainment services for tourists. Tours in Luc Ngan district will combine experiencing lychee gardens and visiting scenic spots such as Cam Son lake, Khuon Than lake, Am Vai pagoda, streams and mountains.
"I just took a picture and then peeled the lychee to eat. The flesh is thick and ivory white. When I bite into it, it feels full of water, sweet and fragrant, making me want to eat a kilo but I have to hold back because I'm afraid of the heat," Thuong shared about her experience in the lychee garden.
The lychee branches are low so you can pick the fruit by simply reaching up. The lychee fruit is large, bright red, and stands out to the naked eye or in photos.
Thuong said enjoying lychee in the garden is more interesting and delicious than eating fruit bought at the market or supermarket. Fresh lychee eaten in the garden will have a fresher and sweeter taste, while lychee bought outside has a slightly sour taste.
The experience of picking lychees in Luc Ngan gives Thuong the feeling of picking fruit in the Western gardens. "Going to the garden to pick lychees, you can both eat the fruit and have beautiful check-in photos. If you can hang a hammock under the lychee trees and reach up to pick the fruit to eat, it would be even better," Thuong shared.
Thuong also bought lychees as gifts. One kilo of lychees bought at the garden costs 30,000 VND, buying 20 kilos or more costs 20,000 VND. Before that, Thuong bought an entrance ticket for 60,000 VND.
According to Thuong, this is a suitable experience for the weekend, you can go and return in the day. The most reasonable time to visit the lychee season is in the morning, but remember to have breakfast before eating lychee. Eating lychee when hungry causes the sugar level in the body to increase suddenly, easily leading to "lychee drunk", dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea. Thuong herself also had stomach cramps after eating lychee, so the whole group rested and had an early lunch. According to the electronic information portal of the Bac Giang Department of Health, when eating lychee, adults should not eat more than 10 fruits, children should only eat 3-4 fruits. When drunk, drink a glass of sugar water to improve the situation.
A representative of the lychee garden where the business experienced said that lychee picking attracts visitors of all ages, both domestic and foreign, self-sufficient groups or companies and agencies coming to organize team building. Weekends are the time when the number of visitors is highest, with an estimated average of 500 - 1,000 visitors.
In about 10 days, lychees in the gardens and hills will be ripe. Lychee season only lasts about 2-3 weeks. Most tours are only organized during this time, which is the peak of the lychee season, so visitors should take advantage of the time to experience it. Near the end of July, the lychee season will end.
