On February 28, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) announced that it had successfully saved the life of a female patient suffering from severe respiratory failure after drinking "happy water".
Specifically, the patient is a 23-year-old female (residing in Tan Phu district), hospitalized in a state of severe respiratory failure on the evening of February 27.
According to the patient, at around 11pm she attended a birthday party with a group of 5 friends. One of them bought a bottle of unlabeled wine to drink.
After drinking a few glasses, the patient realized it was "happy water" to increase the feeling of joy and refreshment.
About two hours later, the patient began vomiting, became comatose, and rapidly suffered respiratory failure, and was transferred to Thong Nhat Hospital for emergency care. The others were unaffected.
Recognizing this as a critical respiratory failure situation, the doctors immediately intubated the patient and put him on a ventilator. Fortunately, after 24 hours, the patient's health has stabilized and he is being monitored in the intensive care unit.
Doctor Hoang Ngoc Anh - deputy head of the intensive care and anti-poison department, Thong Nhat Hospital - said that through testing, the "happy water" that the patient used contained the main ingredients of addictive substances such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine...
These are particularly dangerous and life-threatening drugs.
Every year, the hospital receives an average of 5-7 cases requiring emergency treatment after using drugs and ecstasy. This is the first time the unit has treated a case of drinking "happy water" leading to critical condition.
Currently, there is no antidote for these poisoning cases, patients are only given supportive treatment such as intubation and mechanical ventilation. If the patient arrives late, the prognosis is very critical.
According to Dr. Anh, using "happy water" will cause excitement due to its effect on the nerves, the patient will feel refreshed, stimulated, talkative and then can lead to convulsions, agitation, multiple organ damage, stroke, myocardial infarction...
"Therefore, do not try these stimulants even once. If used, it will cause consequences for yourself such as endangering your life or endangering those around you," Dr. Anh recommends.
Hospitalized after using ecstasy
On the same day, Thong Nhat Hospital also announced that it had received and treated a 50-year-old man living in Tan Binh (HCMC) who was poisoned by stimulants.
According to the patient, after the drinking party, some friends invited him to go to a beer club and forced him to take stimulants. After returning home, the patient became lethargic and was taken to Thong Nhat Hospital by relatives for emergency treatment.
The patient was diagnosed with amphetamine poisoning in ecstasy, and was quickly treated with intensive care, rehydration, oxygen, and vital signs monitored. By the morning of February 28, the patient was discharged from the hospital.
