Mr. Sarkozy opposed Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO during his presidency (2007 - 2012) and the Ukraine conflict did not change this view.
The former French President analyzed that Ukraine has every right to defend itself, but defending Kiev's right to join NATO is a mistake. Currently, Kiev needs to maintain a neutral position, with security guarantees from the international community and become a bridge between Russia and Europe.
Saying that current French President Emmanuel Macron was right to try to dialogue with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Mr. Sarkozy expressed regret that Mr. Macron did not continue this dialogue, as he did in 2008 - the time of the Georgia crisis.
Ukraine becomes the 6th country to receive NATO partner status.
In late September 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kiev was applying for early NATO membership.
