The once-popular MOBA game Heroes of Newerth is about to be revived?

According to GameRant , Heroes of Newerth (HoN) used to be one of the prominent MOBA titles that directly competed with League of Legends (LoL) and Dota 2. However, due to its inability to maintain its appeal, HoN officially closed in 2022. But now, the game's social media activities are fueling speculation about a sudden revival.

After being inactive for 3 years, the social network account X of the game HoN suddenly returned and attracted hundreds of thousands of interactions from the gaming community.

On January 1, the official X account of Heroes of Newerth posted a short message: "Happy NEW Year", with the word "NEW" capitalized, after more than three years of not posting any content. In addition, HoN 's website also had some small changes, with the appearance of a logo silhouette and sparkling particle effects. These signs immediately attracted the attention of the gaming community.

Not only the post on New Year's Day, on January 6, HoN continued to post an image of a large cracked egg, further increasing curiosity and excitement. The community immediately made many speculations that the game would be re-released, while others thought that HoN characters could be brought to Dota 2 or even a version on the mobile platform.

Heroes of Newerth failed because it failed to maintain a stable player base and lacked innovation compared to other MOBA competitors.

Following the success of the Warcraft 3 mod Dota , the MOBA genre exploded. The simple yet engaging concept of players battling to destroy each other’s bases became a formula that attracted millions of players. At its peak, the likes of League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm , and Heroes of Newerth were competing fiercely for market share.

However, due to the inability to maintain a stable player base, coupled with the dominance of major competitors, HoN decided to cease operations. The announcement in December 2021 from developer Garena at that time confirmed that this was a "final farewell" to the gaming community.

Currently, there has been no official announcement from the developer about future plans. However, recent moves suggest that they may be preparing for a big event. If this turns out to be true, comparing Heroes of Newerth to modern MOBA titles like League of Legends, Dota 2 , or mobile products like Mobile Legends will be a notable challenge.
