On March 31, information from Da Nang Hospital said that it had just successfully performed the third autologous stem cell transplant on patient HTN (52 years old, residing in Quang Ngai City, Quang Ngai Province).
Previously, patient N. had bone pain and could not walk, so he went to Da Nang Hospital for examination. Through testing and evaluation, the patient was in the high-risk group, stage 3 multiple myeloma, so he was indicated for bone marrow transplantation using autologous stem cell transplantation.
The patient underwent bone fusion surgery and medical treatment at Da Nang Hospital for 4 sessions, each lasting 3 weeks. After the treatment, tests showed that the patient had achieved complete remission.
The patient was transferred to the organ and stem cell transplant center and underwent autologous stem cell transplantation by doctors from the Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology.
Doctors separated the stem cells using a separator, then infused them back into the patient's body through an intravenous line. After nearly 20 days of stem cell infusion, the patient was stable, walking normally, and was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong, Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology - Da Nang Hospital (the person who directly performed the autologous stem cell transplant for patient N.), said that the difficulty of the transplant was calculating how to extract enough stem cells to successfully perform the transplant and ensuring an absolutely sterile environment for the patient.
According to Dr. Huong, autologous stem cell transplantation is a new advanced treatment method applied in Da Nang, taking the patient's own stem cells and transplanting them back into the patient, helping to quickly restore the patient's blood-producing system after high-dose chemotherapy, to prevent life-threatening complications.
Since 2023, Da Nang Hospital has successfully performed the first autologous stem cell transplant with the support of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Up to now, the hospital has routinely performed this technique.
Autologous stem cell transplantation is a technique that offers a chance of survival and significantly improves the quality of life for patients with malignant hematological diseases such as: lymphoma, myeloproliferative syndrome, multiple myeloma, leukemia, Hodgkin's disease...
