On March 26, MobiFone Telecommunications Corporation officially announced the provision of 5G services. In the first phase, 5G services will be concentrated in the centers of major provinces and cities.
Previously, the Vietnam Internet Center also announced the 5G network speed of commercialized network operators as well as provinces and cities in February 2025.
In February 2025, although not yet officially commercialized, MobiFone's 5G test download speed reached 284.89 Mbps and upload 53.37. Viettel's 5G download and upload speeds ranked second at 226.27 Mbps and 29.83 Mbps, respectively. VNPT's 5G download and upload speeds were 157.17 Mbps and 45.5 Mbps, respectively.
To test the actual 5G network speed of MobiFone after commercialization, VietnamPlus reporters conducted tests in many different areas in Hanoi.
According to measurement results, Viettel is currently the network operator with the widest 5G coverage in Hanoi, covering a series of central areas such as Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Hai Ba Trung, Cau Giay and some suburban districts. Next is VinaPhone with a smaller coverage area, mainly concentrated in the central area and some main roads.
Meanwhile, MobiFone has more limited coverage, mainly in some densely populated areas. According to the map, MobiFone's 5G coverage is mainly concentrated in the Hoan Kiem Lake area, Ba Dinh district, Dong Da district,...
Through 5G speed tests in different areas of Hanoi, it can be seen that MobiFone's network speed is slightly better than other networks. Data from i-Speed also shows that this network's 5G speed is also higher. The reasons may come from a number of factors such as:
MobiFone has fewer 5G users: Due to the later deployment, the actual number of subscribers using MobiFone's 5G may be low, helping the network to be less overloaded and maintain high speeds.
Focus on quality over coverage: MobiFone can deploy 5G in some selected areas with more optimal bandwidth, instead of widespread coverage. The representative of this network also said that, initially, it will focus on 5G coverage in big cities where demand is high.
Frequency band used: MobiFone deploys 5G network on 3,800-3,900 MHz band which can achieve higher speed but narrower coverage.
Therefore, to achieve better coverage, this network operator is continuing to deploy more 5G broadcasting stations in the near future.
Since the beginning of 2025, many notable goals in developing telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam have been announced. Along with the determination to expand 5G coverage from telecommunications enterprises, a series of support policies and commitments from the Government are expected to create strong steps forward in developing digital infrastructure, especially 5G coverage.
According to Ericsson research, by 2029, 5G networks will account for about 50% of total mobile subscribers in Vietnam. Currently, more than 25% of national data traffic has been transmitted via 5G, making this technology an important driving force for the digital economy./.
