NDO - Ericsson forecasts that global mobile data traffic will increase by nearly 200% from 2024 to the end of 2030. The number of 5G subscribers in Southeast Asia is expected to reach around 680 million by the end of 2030. The average data traffic per smartphone in Southeast Asia will increase from 19 GB/month in 2024 to 39 GB/month in 2030.

Mobile data speeds to nearly triple by end of 2030

5G Standalone (5G SA) and 5G Advanced are expected to be top priorities for telecommunications service providers (CSPs) this decade, as they deploy new features to create value-focused services rather than just data volume.

The analysis is presented in the November edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, with forecasts extending through 2030.

Mobile network data speeds are expected to nearly triple by the end of 2030 from current levels, according to the report.

The report also shows that today's pioneering service providers are offering differentiated connectivity models that ensure uninterrupted premium connectivity when needed, thereby creating new revenue and growth business opportunities.

5G SA deployment and testing areas around the world.

Nearly 20% of the approximately 320 CSPs that have commercialized 5G are deploying 5G SA. Increasing the density of 5G SA base stations and expanding mid-band spectrum are seen as key to fully exploiting the potential of 5G, including intelligent, programmable network features.

Currently, only about 30% of base stations globally deploy mid-band 5G. It is forecast that nearly 60% of the 6.3 billion global 5G subscriptions by the end of 2030 will be 5G Standalone (SA) subscriptions.

Global mobile data traffic is expected to undergo a major shift, with 5G networks accounting for around 80% of total mobile data traffic by the end of 2030, up from 34% at the end of 2024.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) continues to gain popularity globally and has become one of the second largest 5G use cases, after enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB).

In four of the six market regions, more than 80% of CSPs have deployed FWA. The proportion of FWA providers deploying rate-based plans, with downlink and uplink data specifications similar to cable or fiber services, has increased from 30% to 43% over the past year.

Of the 350 million global FWA connections forecast by the end of 2030, nearly 80% will be delivered over 5G networks.

Southeast Asia: Monthly mobile data traffic to increase from 19 GB in 2024 to 39 GB in 2030

In Southeast Asia and Oceania, the number of 5G subscriptions is expected to reach around 680 million by the end of the forecast period. Countries such as Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand have seen strong growth in 5G subscriptions driven by the expansion of network coverage by operators, increasing consumer awareness of 5G, increasingly affordable 5G devices and promotional strategies from service providers.

In Vietnam, 5G was commercialized in October 2024. Developed 5G markets such as Australia and Singapore continue to leverage advanced 5G capabilities to deliver new services and use cases. Personalized 5G services for businesses are being deployed in Australia as providers test and launch on-demand connectivity solutions.

Mobile data traffic per smartphone in Southeast Asia is expected to increase sharply from 19 GB/month in 2024 to 39 GB/month in 2030.

Ms. Rita Mokbel, President and General Director of Ericsson Vietnam.

Ms. Rita Mokbel, President and CEO of Ericsson Vietnam, shared: "The launch of 5G services in Vietnam will bring new experiences to users and promote the digitalization process of businesses. Vietnam has identified digital transformation as a top priority and a driving force for national growth, and Ericsson is delighted to accompany the country on this 5G journey through cooperation with strategic partners such as Viettel and VNPT".

The report also addresses the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI applications, which have been integrated into devices such as smartphones, laptops, watches, and FWA products. AI can impact mobile network traffic both uplink and downlink, driving traffic growth beyond current forecasts.

Other notable figures from the report include a forecast that global 5G subscriptions will reach nearly 2.3 billion by the end of 2024, accounting for 25% of all global mobile subscriptions. In particular, 5G subscriptions are expected to surpass global 4G subscriptions by 2027.

Additionally, the first 6G deployments are expected to begin in 2030, expanding and enhancing the capabilities of 5G SA and 5G Advanced.
