Green IDC - Leading trend in Vietnam and the world

Data centers are essential infrastructure for the digital economy, but they are also one of the largest energy consumers. According to a report by the International Electricity Agency (IEA), data centers, AI, and cryptocurrencies will consume about 460 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2022, equivalent to nearly 2% of total global electricity demand, a figure that is expected to increase to 1,000TWh by 2026 due to the strong boom in cloud computing, AI, and digital services.

In Vietnam, the power consumption scale of data centers is estimated to reach 169.8 MW (megawatts) in 2024 and is expected to reach 242.4 MW in 2029, growing at a CAGR of 7.38% (According to Research And Markets).

To put this into perspective, 1 MW can power about 800-1000 homes a year under normal usage conditions, indicating that the data center market in Vietnam will grow strongly to meet the growing demand for data storage and processing. However, with the development of the digital economy, the demand for green, energy-saving data centers that meet international standards is increasingly becoming a top priority.

Developed countries have strong policies to promote green data centers. The EU requires owners of data centers with power consumption of 500kW or more to report their annual usage efficiency. Meanwhile, Germany applies a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) standard of less than or equal to 1.5 for old data centers operating before July 1, 2026 and less than or equal to 1.2 for centers operating after July 1, 2026. Singapore only grants construction permits for data centers with PUE of less than 1.3. Big companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are also stepping up investment in data centers using 100% renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.
