The trend of taking the Competency Assessment (CAE) exam for university admission in recent years has increased the need for exam preparation among students. At this time, many 12th graders are frantically looking for a place to prepare for the CAE exam to increase their chances of admission.
Information from the organizations organizing the National High School Graduation Exam for admission shows that in the 2025 admission season, the National High School Graduation Exam will change its structure and question types compared to before, to suit the first generation of students taking the graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program (New General Education Program).
The 2025 High School Graduation Exam (HSA) of Hanoi National University will be adjusted mainly in the science section and the way questions are asked. Specifically, the exam consists of 3 parts, of which two are compulsory: Mathematics and Data Processing, Literature - Language, similar to the current one.
In previous years, the Science section had 50 questions. From 2025, candidates can choose either Science or English. For the Science section, candidates choose 3 out of 5 topics including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography, each topic has 17 questions. The English section has 50 multiple choice questions, used to recruit students for foreign language training programs.
At the same time, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh - Director of the Center for Testing and Assessment of Training Quality (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that from 2025, the structure of the National High School Examination will be adjusted to suit the new program. In particular, Ho Chi Minh City National University will maintain the structure of the language and mathematics sections, while increasing the number of questions in these two sections to increase the reliability and distinction of the exam. The logic - data analysis and problem solving section will be restructured into a scientific thinking section to assess candidates' logic and scientific reasoning when solving real-life situations in the fields of science, technology, economics and society. Thus, the structure of the National High School Examination from 2025 will only have 3 parts: language use (Vietnamese, English), mathematics; scientific thinking (logic, data analysis; scientific reasoning).
The National High School Entrance Exams of Hanoi National University of Education and Ho Chi Minh City National University of Education have also changed. For example, the National High School Entrance Exam of Hanoi National University of Education has 8 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography. Candidates register for the number of subjects according to their university admission needs. The exam combines multiple-choice and essay questions with the score ratio depending on the structure of each test; assessing the level of understanding of core knowledge and the ability to argue, analyze, evaluate, solve problems, and be creative. From 2026, it is expected that the exam will add the subjects of Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology.
The specialized entrance exam of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education consists of 6 independent tests: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, English. The Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology exams consist of 40 questions, divided into three parts, instead of 50 questions with two parts as before.
The 2025 Public Security Competency Test will consist of three parts: mandatory essay, mandatory multiple-choice, and optional multiple-choice. Candidates will take the test in 180 minutes, with a total score of 100. Lieutenant Colonel Ta Xuan Tung, Head of the Department of Content Management and Training Methods, Department of Training, Ministry of Public Security, said that the structure of the 2025 exam will be different from previous years. This adjustment is to suit the first batch of candidates graduating from the 2018 general education program. About 70% of the exam knowledge will be from grade 12, the rest will be from the grade 10 and 11 programs.
In response to the need to review for the National High School Exam of many candidates, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh said that participating in the exam preparation partly helps candidates become more confident and have better test-taking skills. However, caution is needed when preparing for the National High School Exam. Currently, many individuals and organizations that prepare for the National High School Exam rely on the exam structure in the sample exam papers published by universities to create questions for candidates to solve. These tests have not been verified, so there is a possibility of errors. Accordingly, to achieve high scores in the National High School Exam, candidates themselves must have good abilities, this is the result of a long process, studying over a long period of time, not in a short time.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Thao - Director of the Hanoi National University Examination Center said that the National High School Exam is not simply about knowledge of a field or a certain form, but requires students to have a firm grasp of knowledge, analytical and synthesis skills, systematic thinking, and understanding the nature of things. These things cannot be provided by any center in a short time, but require an accumulation process from the time they are in school. Therefore, candidates need to study seriously and diligently in each lesson, test time, and get familiar with the reference test questions of the National High School Exam. The most reliable exam preparation centers are high schools. If students study well the entire high school program, it will be much more effective than randomly practicing at centers.
