Sputniknews quoted Chinese Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Dai Bing speaking at a Security Council meeting on the evening of January 25 as saying: "China calls on relevant parties to increase participation and direct dialogue, gradually resume negotiations to gain more consensus."

He said the international community must show more urgency and step up diplomatic mediation to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

On the same day, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said that the international body welcomed the recent prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, and called on both countries to persistently pursue similar activities.

In a related development, on the same day, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi announced that in the next 10 days he will visit the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (Ukraine), visit Kiev and Russia.

The visit will see a rotation of IAEA representatives at the plant, the 16th such change since the start of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Mr Grossi also highlighted the talks with Russian leaders at the Zaporizhzhia plant, which is currently managed by Moscow. In Russia, his visit was aimed at conducting “political and technical dialogue”.

However, he added that it is not yet possible to talk about stabilizing the situation at Europe's largest nuclear power facility.

The IAEA chief also indicated that a diplomatic solution to the conflict was his goal.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant with 6 units has been off the grid since September 2022. Due to its importance, the IAEA has permanently deployed experts there. The plant is currently managed by a company belonging to the Russian nuclear energy corporation Rosatom.
