On September 11, Taiwan detected the Shandong aircraft carrier 111 km southeast of the island. At that time, the Chinese aircraft carrier was en route to the Western Pacific.
On September 13, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said Chinese military aircraft, including fighter jets and drones, appeared around the island in the morning.
Next, some fighters "flew through the Bashi Channel into the Western Pacific to participate in air-naval coordination exercises with the Shandong aircraft carrier here."
Taiwan's defense ministry also released undated images showing a Keelung-class missile frigate tailing the Shandong.
"Taiwan's defense forces closely monitor the situation and assign specific tasks to patrol aircraft, maritime defense force vessels and ground-based air defense systems," according to a statement from Taiwan.
Beijing has not commented on information related to air and naval exercises in the Western Pacific.
However, China's Eastern Theater Command, which organizes the drills around Taiwan, said today, September 13, that "an air force unit" recently carried out exercises with a range of thousands of kilometers. The announcement did not mention Taiwan.
