With passion and skillful hands, Mr. Khong Van Phi in To Ga village, Cao Phong commune, Song Lo district (Vinh Phuc province) is one of the pioneers in building a model of growing flowers and ornamental plants in the locality with an income of billions of VND/year.
Sharing about his chance to come to this profession, Mr. Phi said: "Since I was a child, I have had a special love for flowers and ornamental plants.
Growing up, I was determined to choose this career to develop the family economy because I realized that this was a potential career, bringing high economic efficiency and also to satisfy my childhood passion.
When I first started growing ornamental plants, I spent most of my time learning about planting and caring techniques, nursery techniques, shaping, and grafting flowers and ornamental plants through books, newspapers, the internet, etc.
I went to flower villages and ornamental plant villages in the provinces of Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Lam Dong... to learn.
I learned from gardeners' practical experience in growing ornamental plants about the characteristics of each type of flower and ornamental plant; common pests and diseases; how to choose suitable varieties, soil, and proper care so that flowers bloom on time for holidays and Tet."
With an initial capital of only about 100 million VND, Mr. Phi chose to grow simple flowers, mainly bougainvillea, because this is an easy-to-grow, easy-to-propagate flower variety, with low input costs, stable output prices, and suitable for market demand.

Mr. Phi added: "Growing bougainvillea is very easy, but to create bougainvillea trees with many different colors and shapes requires growers to skillfully apply grafting techniques and pruning into eye-catching artistic shapes.
Bougainvillea is a climbing plant, flexible, therefore, growers must observe and carefully select branches with good elasticity, bend the main stem first, then the main and secondary branches, large branches must be bent first and then small branches, to avoid damaging the plant. In addition, leaves must be regularly pruned periodically so that the plant will flower soon.
With skillful hands and knowledge and practical experience accumulated from gardeners, after 3-4 months of meticulous planting and care, Mr. Phi's bougainvillea garden grew and developed well with many bright and eye-catching colors, the tree shape was shaped in the traditional tilted shape or waterfall shape. In the first flower crop, Mr. Phi's family earned more than 300 million VND.
Continuing to grasp the needs and trends of the market, up to now, Mr. Phi has expanded the garden area to more than 800 m2, planting more than 200 trees and flowers of all kinds such as roses, pine trees, elm trees, figs, bamboo...
At the same time, he invested in a mesh cover frame, automatic irrigation system, drip and mist spray, and equipped electric lights around the garden to facilitate plant care.
According to Mr. Phi, growing and caring for flowers and ornamental plants is not simple. From ordinary tree roots and flowers, to create bonsai trees with shape, soul, fresh colors and high value, requires the grower to be truly passionate and understand the characteristics of each type of ornamental plant.
Bonsai growers must have skillful hands, an aesthetic and artistic eye, and must be quick and timely in grasping the development of technology and market trends to have appropriate care and shaping methods, from dragon, phoenix, dance, double autumn, three-deity shapes... to trees with liberal and modern shapes and postures.
Growing flowers and ornamental plants is not an easy job. There are even times when growers “do not eat on time, do not sleep on time, and take care of the plants as meticulously as raising a baby”. However, when they see their “children” grow up day by day, they are happy.
Mr. Phi's family's ornamental plants are welcomed and favored by customers in provinces and cities across the country. Flower and ornamental plant growers like Mr. Phi are motivated to continue their career, contributing to bringing brilliant colors and fragrances to everyone and every home.
The success of the flower and ornamental plant growing model not only brings Phi's family billions of dong in income each year, but also creates seasonal jobs for many local workers.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Cao Phong Commune (Song Lo District, Vinh Phuc Province) Khong Van Giap said: "Not only is he a typical example in local economic development, Mr. Khong Van Phi is also an exemplary farmer member.
He is enthusiastic and willing to share his knowledge and experience in growing flowers and ornamental plants with members in the commune, creating jobs for many local workers, contributing to spreading the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty" in the locality.
