Growing sugarcane has low economic efficiency, so Mr. Nguyen Van Minh (61 years old, residing in An Dinh village, Hoa Bac commune, Hoa Vang district, Da Nang city) boldly switched to growing organic guava. Thanks to his diligence in learning and applying technical advances, the guava garden brings his family a good income.
Pioneer in organic guava cultivation
Taking us on a tour of the garden of more than 1 hectare, Mr. Minh confided: "Previously, I grew sugarcane but the economic efficiency was low, because sugarcane was easily affected by bad weather, traders forced down prices, and cultivation costs were high. In 2021, with support from the local government, I boldly borrowed capital to invest in converting from sugarcane to organic guava cultivation. Currently, the guava garden is growing well, bringing high economic efficiency."

When he first switched to growing guava, Mr. Minh encountered many difficulties because he did not understand the technical process and plant properties. Thanks to his diligence in learning from experience and actively applying science and technology to the planting and care process, his guava garden developed quickly, had few pests and diseases, produced high yields, and had large, beautiful fruits.
During the growing process, he always adheres to safe organic guava care methods, without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. He supplements the plants with necessary nutrients using manure and organic fertilizers. At the same time, he manages pests and diseases using biological pesticides, helping to protect plants without harming the environment, ensuring human health.

Currently, on an area of 1 hectare, Mr. Minh grows about 5,000 Taiwanese pear guava and queen guava trees, which produce fruit all year round. According to him, these are two healthy guava varieties, resistant to pests and diseases, suitable for local climate and soil conditions.

Sharing his experience to make guava trees bear fruit and have high productivity, Mr. Minh said: "When the tree develops 4-5 pairs of young leaves, pinch off the top, remove old leaves, cut off young branches, dry branches with pests, weak branches located inside without light to clear the tree canopy and ensure that all branches and leaves have enough sunlight for photosynthesis, minimize pests and diseases, and increase the ability to flower and set fruit.

There should not be too many fruits on each guava tree, as this will cause the tree to not have enough nutrients, leading to fruit drop. In particular, the fruit must be covered with two layers of plastic bags and foam nets to prevent fruit flies from entering and damaging it, and to avoid sunburn.
Harvest all year round
Mr. Minh said that when taking care of guava trees, he must water them regularly every two days to ensure enough moisture in the soil, especially when the tree is flowering and when the fruit is growing. Using an automatic irrigation system helps him save on labor costs for watering the trees, take the initiative in the weather and take care of them more conveniently.
When it comes time to fertilize, weed, hoe, and bag the fruit, Mr. Minh hires 4-5 more workers with an average income of 300,000 VND/person/day. Photo: TN
In addition to the main labor force of the couple, when it comes time to fertilize, weed, hoe, and bag fruit, Mr. Minh also hires 4-5 more workers with an average income of 300,000 VND/person/day.
Ms. Truong Thi Meo (Mr. Minh's wife) said: "Guava is harvested in April and May. However, thanks to our experience in caring for it, our guava garden produces a harvest all year round, bringing high productivity and stable income. On average, each year the organic guava garden brings in more than 200 million VND in revenue, minus expenses, the profit is about 70 million VND. Thanks to that, my family's economy is better than before, the old couple can both take care of the garden and help take care of the grandchildren."
Thanks to the delicious, crunchy, sweet, organic and safe quality of guava, consumers love it. Traders buy it directly from the garden, with stable prices. Photo: TN
In addition, Mr. Minh and his wife also grow coconut, sugarcane, and corn to rotate crops and increase income. In the near future, he plans to continue expanding the guava garden and mobilize people to convert ineffective production land to grow fruit trees in the direction of safe organic agriculture to increase income and improve life.

Mr. Minh excitedly said: "Clean farming not only protects your own health but also protects the environment and ensures the health of consumers. With delicious quality and ensuring food hygiene and safety, my family's organic guava products are very popular with customers. Traders come to the garden to buy at stable prices. I no longer have to worry about good harvests but low prices, or good prices but bad harvests like before."
