Mr. Nguyen Van Luc's family (Bau Lang village, Thach Dai) is raising 50,000 frogs.

Having been involved in frog farming for quite a long time, it was not until 2022 that Mr. Nguyen Van Luc (Bau Lang village, Thach Dai) decided to expand the area to develop the economy. Mr. Luc said: “My family raises Thai frogs on an area of 1,000 m2 , including 6 tanks and 4 cages. This profession has many advantages such as taking advantage of available land area, quite “reasonable” investment costs, easy care, management and high economic efficiency. Besides, frog meat is also a nutritious food source that is popular with many people, and farmers are not too concerned about output issues."

... and raised in cage ponds.

In 2022, Mr. Luc sold 6 tons of frog meat, with a revenue of approximately 300 million VND and a profit of about 80 million VND. This year, he started raising 50,000 frogs in April and plans to sell them later this August.

According to Mr. Luc, there are two common ways to raise frogs: in cement tanks (density of about 100 frogs/ m2 ) and in cages (about 150 frogs/ m2 ). Frog food is mainly mixed pellets combined with available natural food sources such as shrimp, baby fish... However, to raise frogs effectively, many factors are needed such as: good breeds, proper feeding methods, clean breeding areas, and unpolluted water sources.

Frogs are being sold at an average price of 55,000 VND - 60,000 VND/kg (about 4 - 6 frogs/kg depending on size).

Also a model of raising and producing frogs in large quantities in Thach Ha (area 1,000 m2 ), this year, Ms. Tran Thi Nguyet (Minh Dinh village, Tan Lam Huong commune) released 50,000 frogs, nearly double compared to last year (30,000 frogs). Not only raising frogs for meat, she also learned experience and techniques through books, newspapers, and documents for frog reproduction. This closed frog farming model helps the family to have more income and proactively source frogs on the spot.

According to Ms. Nguyet, the frog consumption market is quite diverse. In addition to Ha Tinh, frog meat is also sold in the provinces of Nghe An, Quang Binh... Currently, frogs are being sold at an average price of 55,000 VND - 60,000 VND/kg (about 4 - 6 frogs/kg depending on size). According to calculations, with the current price, this year, Ms. Nguyet's family will continue to have a revenue of hundreds of millions of VND from frog farming.

Thanks to the effectiveness of this model, many local people have come to learn and study the techniques of raising Thai frogs. According to Ms. Nguyet, this is a model that needs to be encouraged to be replicated to help people take advantage of their family gardens and ponds to develop the economy.

Leaders of Thach Ha district visited the frog farming model in the area in early August.

According to the farmers, in the past time, they have received technical support from the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and related units such as the District Farmers' Association, the Center for Science and Technology Application and Plant and Animal Protection... Maintaining and developing this model is not difficult, but it is necessary to pay attention to some common diseases such as intestinal diseases, bloating, for timely treatment. Besides, the frog farming area does not need to be too large, it is possible to take advantage of abandoned ponds with good water sources, or vacant land to place tanks or line with tarpaulin. In addition, frog food is also quite diverse, in addition to industrial food, it can be trash fish or pureed golden apple snails...

Mr. Nguyen Van Duy - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thach Ha district said: "The success of frog farming models in the area not only creates high income, helps families stabilize their lives but also opens up new directions, good ways to promote the local economic development movement. In the coming time, the district will continue to encourage farmers to participate in learning, sharing experiences and care techniques to shift to raising Thai frogs to bring high efficiency".
