In an interview with VNA, Ambassador Le Kim Quy said that this is President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s first visit to Vietnam, taking place in the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1973-2023). The visit is an opportunity for both sides to evaluate the results of cooperation and expect a new turning point for the multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau.
Welcoming the President of Guinea-Bissau is a step to implement the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress: independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development; multilateralization, diversification; proactive and active international integration comprehensively and deeply.
At the regional level, General Secretary and President To Lam's welcoming of African leaders to Vietnam, including the President of Guinea-Bissau, in the first months of his new position, demonstrates Vietnam's respect, close affection, and loyalty towards traditional African friends.
Originating from the sincere support for each other during the struggle for national independence, the relationship between Vietnam and African countries has been constantly strengthened and nurtured, becoming a model and testament to the strength of South-South cooperation.
Ambassador Le Kim Quy said that Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations on September 30, 1973, just one week after Guinea-Bissau declared independence and Vietnam was in the midst of its resistance war to unify the country. Over the past 50 years, the two countries have maintained good political relations. Guinea-Bissau actively supports Vietnam at multilateral forums.
Economic and trade cooperation is a prominent field. Guinea-Bissau is one of the five African countries that supply the largest raw cashew nuts to Vietnam and Vietnam is the third largest export market of Guinea-Bissau. However, the cooperation between Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau is not commensurate with the needs and potential of each side. Guinea-Bissau affirms that it considers Vietnam a priority cooperation partner and is ready to expand practical and effective cooperation in the coming time.
