Artificial intelligence in art products

Recently, some Vietnamese artists have begun to launch art products that apply artificial intelligence (AI).

First applications

If in the past, AI was only used for entertainment purposes by social network users to change the artist's voice in a song, or create new, different melodies for familiar songs, recently many professional artists are also actively using these technologies. Ha Tran said that in the album Nhung con song ngon tay , instead of using one of the three portraits sketched by the artist as the album cover, the female singer and her team considered using landscape photos and works created by AI. After consideration and weighing, the AI option was chosen. The singer of Sac mau said that these images are both soft and gentle and very suitable for the meaning and message of the entire album.

Recently, male singer Dan Truong also attracted attention when releasing the MV Em oi vi dau, which was made 100% by artificial intelligence. He said that his team spent 2 months and many edits to create this product. Using many AI tools such as Leonardo and Runway (Gen-3), more than 600 images were created to serve the production process. Dan Truong shared that the difficulty of this process lies in using AI to create movements, because currently the above tools only support creating 4-second videos at a time, and to get these 4 seconds, it takes from 4 to 16 images. Therefore, the time to make it is relatively long, consuming a lot of effort and time.
Not only Dan Truong, singers like Ha Anh Tuan and Vu Thanh Van also took the first steps in applying AI. For example, in the graphic MV (visualizer MV) Hoa Hong promoting the live concert Sketch a Rose (Sketch a Rose) held in Singapore and Australia, Ha Anh Tuan and his crew used AI to create animations and let them loop throughout the MV. Because it is a graphic MV, this part is quite simple, not too complicated. Or in the MV Kho De Yeu: Part 1 & 2 , Vu Thanh Van also tested the above technology, but because the technology is not yet complete, the image quality is not high.

Mixed reactions

After 2 days of posting, Dan Truong's MV Em oi vi dau has more than 260,000 views - a relatively impressive number. That shows that the use of AI is a special media element, which can attract curiosity, attention and discussion from the audience. According to observations, the above MV combines both animated and still images. However, even in still frames, the speed of the mouth movement when lip-syncing to the lyrics is also delayed. That's not to mention the male singer's face recreated by AI, although quite similar, is stiff, making the image lack vitality and unnaturalness. The moving scenes are even more flawed, when the quality is blurry and the image of the actor in the background is not sharp, sometimes the body proportions are wrong, making them distorted and deformed. This is a general weakness of this technology, when it has not yet detailedly and accurately described the structure of the human body. In addition, the fact that the animated frames can only be created for about 4 seconds leads to too many scene transitions, while the frames lack connection, making the MV fragmented and patchy. It can be said that image quality is the biggest limitation of this technology. The MV Hoa Hong by Ha Anh Tuan or Kho De Yeu by Vu Thanh Van cannot escape the above limitation, when the image is quite blurry. However, because the concept is Sketching Roses related to hand drawing, this is not necessarily a very important weakness. However, the album cover Nhung Cong Song Thuong Tay by Ha Tran is highly appreciated by many people, when it both expresses surreal ideas and opens up many spaces for contemplation for the audience. From that, it can be seen that if used selectively, artificial intelligence has the ability to contribute many unique ideas to the artist. Through the above projects, it can be affirmed that AI with its current limitations should only be a supporting tool, while the artist's creativity is still the most important, so it should not be relied on or abused. Because once the image quality is not guaranteed, it is impossible to evoke emotions for the audience.

Never stop testing AI

Not only in Vietnam, the use of AI in works of art in the world is generally difficult. The famous Korean band RIIZE recently released the AI Generated Visualizer version of the song Impossible and received many mixed reactions, mostly negative, because the images were not sharp. In addition, there was a time when virtual singers were created in Korea, Japan and even in Vietnam, with the desire to bring new experiences, but these projects have gradually lost their appeal. However, AI is still considered by many artists as a powerful support tool, as long as they are not developed to weaken or replace the role of humans. For example, last year, using AI to separate John Lennon's voice from the demo Now and Then gave fans of The Beatles a new song after 5 decades of the band's breakup. Grimes - the ex-wife of billionaire Elon Musk, a famous electronic music artist, is also constantly testing AI in her products...
