In the days leading up to Tet, the shopping atmosphere for Lunar New Year 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City is bustling with abundant goods, attractive promotions and thoughtful preparations from retailers.
On January 26 (December 27), Tin Tuc Newspaper reporters observed that at supermarkets such as Co.opmart, GO!, Lotte, MM Mega Maket An Phu... many Tet-serving items such as confectionery, soft drinks, gifts, processed foods, banh chung, banh tet were sold in abundance. Promotional programs such as buy 1 get 1 free, and free gifts have attracted a large number of people to shop. Purchasing power at the above supermarket systems has increased by 30 - 50% compared to normal days.
Ms. Do Ngoc Van, living in Thu Duc city, said that she took advantage of the last day of the year to go to Co.op mart supermarket to buy pork, ham, fruit, flowers, candy, soft drinks... to prepare offerings for the 3 days of Tet. Compared to last year, the price of fresh food is reduced by 10% and there is a deep promotion of up to 50% on items serving Tet, so it is very beneficial for customers.
This year's Lunar New Year, retail chains in Ho Chi Minh City have also increased their inventory by 10-20% compared to last year, with the proportion of Vietnamese goods increasing. Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc, General Director of Saigon Co.op, said that since the beginning of January, the growth rate of Tet shopping at chains such as Co.opmart, Co.opXtra, and Co.opFood has increased by double digits compared to before. This result is partly due to the Tet promotion programs that are being continuously implemented with many new incentives.
In addition, to meet the people's Tet shopping needs, the Saigon Co.op system is always committed to providing the most complete service, ensuring that goods do not increase in price before, during and after Tet. Currently, 90% of goods serving the Tet market in the system are Vietnamese goods, so prices are affordable and stable for people to shop for Tet.
"Notably, as Tet approaches, many food items are being heavily promoted, with some items discounted up to 70%. Therefore, people can rest assured when going to the supermarket to shop for Tet goods. The supply of goods at the supermarket is quite abundant and the goods are of good quality. The supermarket ensures that there will be no shortage of supply and an increase in prices during Tet," said Mr. Duc.
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Duc Toan, Commercial Director of MM Mega Market system, said that purchasing power is gradually increasing, with the proportion of Vietnamese goods accounting for 97%. “This year's consumption trend is that customers are looking for products that are good for their health. This is one of the product groups with a growth rate of about 20 - 25% compared to last year,” said Mr. Nguyen Duc Toan.
From the perspective of a manufacturing enterprise, Ms. Pham Thi Thu Hong, General Director of Safoco, said that the company has prepared a lot of Tet goods. For example, the output of egg noodles and rice paper in the Tet month is expected to reach 1,650 tons, an increase of 10 - 15% compared to the previous month. Currently, at the peak of Tet, the company is closely following supermarkets to promptly replenish goods on supermarket shelves, ensuring adequate and diverse goods. "Although raw material prices have increased by 15 - 30% since the beginning of 2024, we have decided not to increase selling prices but to increase promotions to stimulate demand," Ms. Hong added.
Regarding purchasing power, Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, said that although there were some concerns at the beginning of December, purchasing power and the amount of goods flowing into the three wholesale markets grew quite well. The Department always accompanies businesses, bringing consumers good-priced goods with promotional programs and price incentives throughout the peak Tet season. In addition, businesses have also prepared plans to increase production in necessary situations and organize mobile sales to handle unusual fluctuations and local shortages if any.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, as the Lunar New Year approaches, supermarket and convenience store systems have increased their staff and service capacity, avoiding empty shelves or customer congestion when shopping. Supermarket and store systems... plan to open almost throughout the Lunar New Year, only closing on the first day; Family Mart, GS25, Kingfood Mart... are open throughout the Lunar New Year.
Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, in recent times, manufacturing and trading enterprises have made great efforts to overcome difficulties caused by the world economic situation. “An issue that businesses need to pay special attention to is food safety, especially for food and foodstuff businesses. In addition to building a methodical and closed production process, businesses also need to pay attention to the source of raw materials from suppliers, ensuring quality and safety,” Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong suggested.
Having just surveyed the wholesale market and modern supermarket system, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that the abundant supply of goods, relatively stable prices, and deep promotion programs will help people celebrate Tet more fully. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has a widespread distribution system, which is a strong point for people to shop more comfortably during Tet. With the support from businesses, local authorities, and distribution systems, people can rest assured about the supply of quality chemical applications at reasonable prices to people before, during and after the Lunar New Year.
