According to experts, the price of live pigs is likely to continue to increase in the coming time, especially in the North and Central regions. In case the demand continues to increase, some localities may record prices reaching 82,000 VND/kg.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien assessed that although the price of live pigs is high, it has not created a significant impact.

"We can look back at 2020 when the price of live pigs reached a historical peak of 105,000 VND/kg, which led to the CPI of April 2020 reaching 6.73%. Compared to the current price of live pigs fluctuating around 80,000 VND/kg, the CPI in January was only 3.68%, so the current high price of pigs has not had a big impact.

The high price of live pigs is also one of the driving forces for us to restructure the livestock industry, change technology, change breeds, change care and feeding processes, improve biosafety and food safety to improve productivity," said Mr. Tien.

According to Mr. Tien, the reason for the high price of live pigs comes from the decrease in the total herd due to the African swine fever epidemic causing great losses, and at the same time the industry has effectively controlled the situation of animal smuggling.

Mr. Tien said: “Currently, African swine fever is still occurring, vaccination has not been widely implemented, causing the total pig herd to be seriously affected. In addition, recently we have focused on fighting smuggling, especially coordinating with C05 to carry out 11 criminal arrests, especially the arrest of vehicles illegally transporting animals in Tay Ninh with a very large volume, including pigs and poultry”.

In order to stabilize pork prices, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has proposed that localities allocate budgets to deploy large-scale vaccination against African swine fever.

Mr. Phung Duc Tien emphasized: “The Prime Minister has issued many directives but vaccination in the provinces has not been widely implemented. The evidence is very clear that the vaccinated pigs in Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, Bac Can... have solved the problem of disease spread. That shows that vaccination is an important issue that needs to be implemented. I can affirm that vaccines are a steel shield. The direction of vaccination in the provinces needs to be ensured.”

In addition, Vietnam is also implementing strict control measures on the import of pork products. Imports have a significant impact on domestic prices of the entire livestock industry, accounting for 26% of the total agricultural sector. At the same time, it is necessary to promote exports, as in 2024, the export value in the livestock sector reached 553.6 million USD, an increase of 6.5% but still modest, so a market expansion strategy is needed. Notably, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has directed a number of large enterprises in the pork processing industry to access the Hala market to expand consumption channels.

Mr. Phung Duc Tien affirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has implemented many synchronous solutions to stabilize the market. It is forecasted that in the coming time, pork prices may gradually return to a stable level, ensuring that people's lives are not negatively affected.
