Ho Chi Minh City will develop from 1 to 3 emergency centers, and open two more water and air emergency stations.

On September 25, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong said that this expansion is part of the project to improve the capacity of the 115 Emergency Center in a professional manner from now until 2025 and the following years , which is being submitted to the city's leaders for approval. This is one of the key tasks to turn the city into an ASEAN health care center with an advanced medical system and high-tech applications.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has only one emergency center located in District 10 with a small area, managing 40 ambulances and 39 satellite emergency stations located at hospitals. In recent years, the number of emergency calls has increased, the reception of calls and coordination of emergency forces have improved a lot, but "the results are not as expected". When emergency situations such as the Covid-19 outbreak occur, the center has to move the switchboard to Quang Trung Software Park to handle the call volume during peak periods, and establish 5 more field stations in the gateway area.

According to the health leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, when the city develops specialized healthcare in the area into 3 clusters, including cluster 1 being hospitals in central districts; cluster 2 being Tan Kien; cluster 3 being Thu Duc, the 115 emergency system must also develop accordingly to best meet the needs of patients.

In particular, the 115 Emergency Center - Tan Kien cluster is the command base, newly invested in construction with spacious, modern infrastructure, designed to suit emergency activities outside the hospital. This place will have a training area, practical training for emergency specialists outside the hospital (paramedic), an area for supplying equipment and supplies, a specialized warranty and maintenance area for ambulances... and especially a center to receive calls, advise on on-site treatment for people, and coordinate emergency teams outside the hospital.

The remaining two emergency centers in the central cluster and Thu Duc cluster will be responsible for emergency care for people in the area. Thu Duc City People's Committee has planned to add land for the emergency center located in this cluster.

A water rescue station will be established in Can Gio district, with the coordination and support of the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard to send specialized rescue boats to provide emergency services to people in Thanh An island commune, people living and working in the Can Gio sea area and neighboring areas. The air rescue station in the area is supported by Military Hospital 175 - where there is a helicopter landing pad for air rescue services that has been put into operation.

"Two satellite emergency stations for waterways and airways are an indispensable activity when wanting to transform out-of-hospital emergency activities in a professional direction," said Mr. Thuong.

The Department has also ordered health training schools to open major codes and soon deploy recruitment and training for specialized medical personnel, called out-of-hospital emergency specialists. The 115 Emergency Center will deploy updating knowledge and out-of-hospital emergency skills for satellite emergency stations located in public and private hospitals.
