The memorial relief of the late Senator John McCain is located on the shore of Truc Bach Lake, Hanoi, depicting McCain, an American pilot whose plane was shot down on October 26, 1967 while bombing the North and had to parachute into the lake. After more than 5 years in Hoa Lo Prison, McCain was released under the Paris Agreement in 1973.
During his six decades of service to the United States, Mr. McCain spent three decades promoting relations with Vietnam, making important contributions to the normalization of relations between the two countries.
After returning to the US, Mr. McCain returned to Vietnam many times, visiting the relief marking the event when he and his plane were shot down by the Vietnamese military and civilians. Mr. McCain passed away on August 25, 2018, due to brain cancer. (Photo: Phuong Uyen).
