(CLO) At least 19 people were killed when US President Donald Trump launched large-scale airstrikes against Houthi forces in Yemen on Saturday, warning of "hell to come" on the group if they did not stop attacks in the Red Sea.
Mr Trump also warned Iran that it must immediately stop supporting the militant group in the Middle East. He said that if Iran threatens the United States, "the United States will hold you fully responsible and we will not take it easy!"
The attacks, which one official said would last days and possibly weeks, come as the US ramps up sanctions pressure on Iran while trying to bring it to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.

At least 13 civilians were killed and nine wounded in US airstrikes on Yemen's capital Sanaa, according to the Houthi-run health agency.
Six others, including four children and a woman, were killed and 11 injured in a US airstrike on Saada province in northern Yemen, the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV channel reported.
The Houthi political body described the attacks as “war crimes”. “Our Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to respond to the escalation with escalation,” the statement said. Residents in Sanaa said the airstrikes hit a building in the Houthi stronghold.

The Houthis, an armed movement that has controlled much of Yemen for the past decade, have carried out more than 100 attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and nearby waters in the Middle East since November 2023. The Houthis say the attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza.
Other forces in the Iran-backed “Axis of Resistance” in the Middle East, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, have been severely weakened by Israel since the Gaza conflict began. The regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, which has close links to Iran, was also overthrown by rebels last December.

Now, almost only Yemen's Houthi forces in the "Axis of Resistance" remain and regularly attack the Red Sea, forcing shipping companies to switch to longer and more expensive routes around southern Africa to travel from Asia to Europe.
The US administration of former President Joe Biden sought to weaken the Houthis’ capabilities but only limited action. Meanwhile, US officials say Mr. Trump has authorized a more aggressive approach, which has heated up the Middle East again.
