President Trump stops Secret Service from protecting Biden's two children

US President Donald Trump on March 17 revoked Secret Service protection for former President Joe Biden's two children, Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden.

"Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for a long time, all paid for by the American taxpayer," Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social. He said Hunter Biden's security team had up to 18 people and called it "absurd," according to AFP.

According to President Trump, Mr. Hunter Biden is vacationing in South Africa, a country to which Mr. Trump recently suspended aid over alleged rights violations.

Trump announced a similar move for Ashley Biden. "Please note that, effective immediately, Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden, who has 13 Secret Service agents protecting her, will be removed from the list," Trump added.

Federal law grants Secret Service protection to former presidents and their spouses, but only to children under the age of 16. However, the privilege is often extended for a period of time to adult children.

Why did President Trump declare Biden's pardons 'null and void'?

Asked about President Trump's move, a Secret Service spokesman told AFP: "We are aware of the president's decision to end protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden. The Secret Service will comply and is actively working with the protection teams and the White House to ensure compliance as soon as possible."

President Trump's withdrawal of security detail for Biden's two children is seen as the latest apparent or overt act of retaliation against those he has viewed as enemies since returning to office in January, according to AFP.

The Trump administration has previously revoked the security clearances of former President Biden and dozens of former officials. The White House argued that people are not entitled to security protection and lifetime immunity, according to AFP.
