On November 29, US media commented that President Joe Biden's absence from the 28th United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP 28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), shows the US's dilemma in balancing fossil fuel consumption and its climate ambitions.

According to the New York Times, on the one hand, Mr. Biden is facing pressure to increase oil production to reduce domestic gasoline prices, but on the other hand, he still has to promote environmental ambitions on the world stage. In the US, the Biden administration's energy and climate policies are under various political pressures.

Worried by Republican criticism of President Biden's radical green agenda, moderate Democrats want the president to acknowledge that the United States is producing record amounts of crude oil this year.

Meanwhile, climate activists, especially young voters who voted for Mr. Biden in the 2020 election, want the President to shut down all wells.

According to the Washington Post , the White House boss's decision to be absent from COP 28 could cause the US to face strong criticism from developing countries - the countries that have caused the least climate change but are most vulnerable. The US is ranked among the countries that emit the largest amount of greenhouse gases in the world, causing global warming.

Thus, the US representatives attending COP 28 will be Mr. John Kerry, President Biden's special envoy on climate change, National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi and Senior Advisor John Podesta.
