According to DW , the first session of the 21st legislature took place in the context of the two parties, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD), which won the most votes in the recent election, conducting negotiations to form a government.
At the session, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dismissed Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his cabinet, marking the end of the previous election term. However, Mr. Scholz will remain as interim Chancellor until a new coalition government is formed.
In addition, the session also elected Ms. Julia Kloeckner of the CDU/CSU alliance as the new President of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag), and approved the legislative body's work program.
Talks to form a governing coalition are underway in Germany. CDU/CSU conservative coalition leader Friedrich Merz, who is expected to head the new government, has expressed his hope of forming a government by Easter.
