After the welcoming ceremony, the two leaders moved to the headquarters of the Party Central Committee Office to begin talks. President Biden is also expected to meet with senior Vietnamese leaders.

This is President Biden's first visit to Vietnam since he took office in early 2021. The event takes place on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership between the two countries. During the visit, the two countries will review the Comprehensive Partnership and outline directions for the coming time.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc assessed President Biden’s visit as a “very special” event, as it was the first time a US president had paid a state visit at the invitation of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This was also an important milestone in Vietnam-US relations, demonstrating the US’s respect for Vietnam’s political system and an opportunity to deepen the relationship between the two countries.

Vietnam-US relations were normalized in July 1995 and upgraded to Comprehensive Partnership in July 2013, with many high-level visits by leaders of the two countries taking place. The two sides cooperate in all fields, from politics - diplomacy, economics, education, to science - technology, defense - security.
