(Quang Binh Portal) - That was the direction of comrade Doan Ngoc Lam, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) at the meeting of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing held on the afternoon of February 28, 2025. Attending were members of the Steering Committee and representatives of leaders of relevant sectors, localities and units.

According to the report of the representative of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing, Quang Binh currently has more than 3,900 fishing vessels of 6m or more, of which more than 1,170 are 15m or more; 291 are 12m-15m; more than 2,470 are 6m-12m. Up to now, 87.3% of fishing vessels in the province have been inspected; 97.9% of fishing vessels have been installed with voyage monitoring equipment; 100% of fishing vessels have completed marking and registration numbers...

Delegates attending the meeting

With the drastic implementation of all levels and sectors, in 2024, the awareness of officials and fishermen has been raised; the management of fishing vessels and the control of fishing vessel activities have been increasingly strict, which has been recognized by the working group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, especially the results of handling "3 no" fishing vessels. Along with that, the inspection, control and handling of IUU fishing violations have also been carried out effectively, especially no fishing vessels illegally fishing in foreign waters have been arrested or handled, and fishing vessels that have crossed the permitted fishing waters without written approval have been punished; the situation of losing connection to VMS devices and crossing the border has decreased significantly.

Steering Committee members report on results of work against IUU fishing

However, the work to combat IUU fishing still has many limitations that need to be urgently overcome to prepare to welcome and work with the EC Inspection Delegation, such as the low rate of monitoring seafood output through ports; the situation of crossing maritime boundaries and losing VMS connection still occurs; the reliability of fishing logs is not guaranteed; the verification and handling of IUU fishing acts violating fishing logs and fishing in the wrong areas are still limited, and the registration and licensing of fishing have not been completed.

At the meeting, delegates focused on discussing and discussing solutions to overcome shortcomings and limitations and proposed a number of tasks in the fight against IUU fishing in the coming time.

Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, the Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing acknowledged the achievements in the fight against IUU fishing of localities and units in the past time. Regarding the tasks in the coming time, he requested departments, branches, units and localities, according to their functions and tasks, to focus on implementing assigned anti-IUU fishing tasks under the direction of the Prime Minister; strengthen the management of fishing vessels; closely monitor and manage the recording of logs of seafood loading and unloading output through ports; focus on inspecting and controlling fishing vessels on rivers and at sea; strictly handle IUU fishing vessels; continue to strengthen propaganda and mobilize fishermen to comply with regulations on combating IUU fishing; monitor and guide the operation of fishing ports in accordance with regulations...

In addition, the Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing also assigned specific responsibilities to relevant departments and branches based on their functions and tasks to coordinate well in combating IUU fishing in the area.
