The COVID-19 pandemic recorded its first case in late December 2019 in Wuhan, China. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern and assessed it as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020.
In Vietnam, under the leadership of the Party, the management of the State, the participation of the entire political system, the participation of people and businesses, the support of international friends and partners, the whole country has united in the fight against the epidemic. Vietnam has become one of the countries that "comes later but comes first" in the fight against the epidemic, opening up domestic socio-economic activities from October 11, 2021 and opening up to the international community from March 15, 2022.
On May 5, 2023, after more than 3 years of the pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency of international concern; at this point, the world has recorded over 696 million cases in 231 countries and territories, including over 6.9 million deaths.

The Government, the Prime Minister, and the National Steering Committee thank the companionship and support of countries and international organizations for Vietnam.
Analyzing some difficulties and limitations, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested all levels, sectors and localities to continue to be vigilant, take early and remote prevention measures against all types of epidemics; continue to overcome the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic. Along with that, continue to perfect institutions, mechanisms and policies, create a synchronous, complete and appropriate legal framework system, promptly meet the requirements of epidemic prevention and control (especially in terms of purchasing drugs, vaccines, equipment, medical supplies...).
