The current water level of Thac Bo Lake is 59.84m, the total discharge through Thac Ba Hydropower Plant is 3,201 m3/s, and is not expected to increase further; the project, factory and reservoir are still safe.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quyen, General Director of Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company, by 1:00 p.m. on September 11, the water flow into the lake reached 2,992 m3/s, the discharge flow was 3,005 m3/s, the hydropower reservoir was safe.
Previously, the Office of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that as of 9:00 a.m. on September 11, Tuyen Quang Hydropower Company still had 5 bottom discharge gates at the hydropower reservoir (3 gates had been closed), and the water flow to the reservoir was decreasing rapidly.
Thac Ba Hydropower Plant is still discharging at maximum 3 gates, the water flow has decreased rapidly compared to yesterday (still 3,100 m3/s, equal to the amount of water discharged).
"Heavy rains caused by storm No. 3 upstream have significantly decreased and are not expected to increase further. Hydropower plants and reservoirs are safe. However, we must not be complacent," said a representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
According to Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company, the water flow into Thac Ba Lake has now decreased to 3,180 m3/s (a decrease of more than 1,000 m3/s compared to yesterday afternoon).
The current water level of the reservoir is 59.84m, the total discharge through Thac Ba Hydropower Plant is 3,201 m3/s, and is not expected to increase further. The project, factory and reservoir are still safe.
Previously, according to monitoring data from Thac Ba Hydropower Plant, at 5:00 p.m. on October 9, the upstream water level of Thac Ba Lake was at 59.62m, much higher than the normal water level, which is only required to be 58m.
At the same time, the water flow to the lake reached 4,450m3/s, while even though all generators were operating and all 3 spillways were opened, only more than 3,003m3/s could be discharged, leading to a very high risk of insecurity of the lake and dam...
On September 10, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son signed Official Dispatch No. 91/CD-TTg dated September 10, 2024 sent to the Secretaries and Chairmen of the People's Committees of three provinces, including Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Yen Bai, on the implementation of urgent measures to ensure the safety of Thac Ba hydropower dam.
The dispatch clearly stated that currently, the upstream water level of Thac Ba hydroelectric reservoir is at a very high level, the flow to the lake exceeds the lake's designed flood discharge capacity.
To ensure safety for Thac Ba Hydropower Reservoir, the Prime Minister requested the Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committees of Lao Cai, Ha Giang, and Yen Bai provinces to directly lead and direct local authorities to review and immediately implement measures to prevent and reduce the flow to Thac Ba Hydropower Reservoir.
