A source from the Council of the European Union (EU) said that permanent representatives of the bloc's member states failed to reach a consensus at a meeting on March 10 on extending sanctions against Russia for another 6 months.

According to the source, the final decision on extending the sanctions has been postponed until March 12.

The 27-nation bloc's sanctions against Moscow are usually extended every six months, with the next extension scheduled for March 15.

Meanwhile, the European Pravda newspaper also reported that Hungary is currently the only EU country blocking the extension of sanctions.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto pledged to oppose the extension of EU sanctions and called on the bloc to wait for the outcome of negotiations between the US and Russia on ending the special military operation in Ukraine.

The EU recently approved the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a ban on imports of primary aluminum and 73 ships of the "dark fleet".

The sanctions package adds 48 Russian individuals and 35 entities to the blacklist, which includes asset freezes and travel bans.
