TH Group brings sustainable development story to Green Vietnam Festival

The Green Vietnam Festival will open on November 9 at the Youth Cultural House (4 Pham Ngoc Thach, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), bringing readers a green living space in the heart of the city, enhancing their experience of the green economy.

Participating in the festival, TH Group will have a space for readers and visitors to experience the sustainable development space that the group has applied for many years.

TH pioneers circular economy, aiming for Net Zero

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , a representative of TH Group said that the green economic model - circular economy pioneered by the group in all TH member units is the way the Group accompanies the Vietnamese Government's commitment to implementing the goals of combating climate change and sustainable development, towards Net Zero by 2050.

TH representative said that the company has been serious and proactive in implementing sustainable development since its inception. Since 2018, TH has started collecting data on sustainable development to not only understand the effectiveness of sustainable development parameters but also help monitor how these parameters change over time.

In particular, the company's goal by 2025 is to reduce 5,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year from using solar power for production. 100% of water returned to the environment meets discharge standards as prescribed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and 10,000 trees are planted and well cared for per year. Each year, TS will implement community initiatives that benefit 1 million people.

By 2030, TH commits to Emission reduction: 10,000 tons of CO₂/year from using solar power production. 100% of water returned to the environment meets discharge standards according to regulations of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

TH will plant and take good care of 50,000 trees/year and each year carry out community initiatives that benefit 1 million people.

Many activities to spread green lifestyle

As a founding member of PRO Vietnam, TH Group, through the alliance, collects used packaging, joining hands for a green - clean - beautiful environment. In addition, TH annually organizes the campaign "Collecting boxes - spreading green living" at the TH true mart system. In 2023, the program collected 1.9 tons of packaging, an increase of 72% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the chain of plastic reduction initiatives, TH Group said that the enterprise has applied many plastic reduction solutions, typically replacing nylon bags, plastic spoons, and disposable plastic straws with more environmentally friendly bioplastics, reducing the number of spoons by half (with environmentally friendly bioplastics)...

In addition, the company has reduced the weight of each plastic bottle by 17%, reduced plastic on shrink wrap for some products, reduced the amount of glue used to attach straws to milk carton packaging... Thanks to the synchronous application of the above solutions, TH has reduced more than 600 tons of plastic per year, equivalent to saving about 16 billion VND.

In 2023, TH will cooperate with the For Vietnamese Stature Fund and Green Future Plastic Company to complete a special school where part of the construction materials are made from recycled plastic. The school currently serves the learning and living needs of about 65 ethnic minority, poor and near-poor students in Trung Ha commune, Quan Son district, Thanh Hoa.

In addition, TH Group said that turning waste into resources is a typical mindset of the circular economy. At TH farms, organic waste is collected and processed into biological buffers to serve the farm and produce organic fertilizers.

At TH Group's farms and factories, leading-edge and modern waste treatment technology has helped significantly reduce methane emissions.

For the wastewater treatment system, each TH dairy farm cluster installs a wastewater treatment system that meets discharge standards according to regulations.

In addition, TH Group has invested hundreds of billions of VND to continuously expand and increase the capacity of the wastewater treatment system. Most recently, TH has just put into operation an additional system with a capacity of 2,500 m3/day, applying advanced technology from the Netherlands and constructed by general contractor Koastal of Singapore. The system operates continuously 24/7 and 365 days/year, continuously and automatically monitors data online to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

Increase the use of renewable energy and biomass electricity production

TH has deployed solar panels since 2020 on farm and factory rooftops at projects in Nghe An and Phu Yen. To date, TH produces about 8 million kWh of solar power each year, meaning a reduction of nearly 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year compared to using fossil fuels.

At dairy farms, rooftop solar power systems also act as a heat-insulating layer, contributing to providing cool, healthy, and comfortable living conditions for dairy cows.

Meanwhile, bagasse – a by-product of the production process of Nghe An Sugarcane Company Limited (NASU – a unit of TH Group) is used to produce electricity. On average, 30.7kWh of electricity can be produced per ton of sugarcane. In recent years, each sugarcane pressing season, NASU has produced about 15 million kWh of electricity, selling more than 5 million kWh to the state, increasing revenue by 10-12 billion VND per pressing season.

TH Milk Joint Stock Company (THM) and May Forestry Joint Stock Company (May Forestry) use biomass energy generated from waste products of the wood production process such as wood chips, wood chips, etc. as fuel for boilers. This helps reduce the amount of gasoline consumed at the two factories, thereby contributing to a significant reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2023, thanks to the use of biomass energy, TH Milk Factory (THM) will reduce emissions by nearly 62% (scope 1). Average emissions/product unit will decrease by nearly 13% compared to 2022 (scopes 1 and 2).

Chemical-free fields call birds back

Starting from 2018, Dalatmilk (a unit of TH Group) has gradually stopped using chemical fertilizers; only using organic fertilizers on fields growing raw materials for dairy cows. The farm has successfully converted to organic farming, ensuring safe input materials for clean fresh milk products.

The benefit of this activity for land resources is the regeneration of biological systems in the soil and water sources. Every time the field is plowed to dry the soil waiting for the new crop to be sown, large flocks of storks return, flying around the entire field, looking for food. This place has become a fertile land for many species of birds and storks.
