Strengthening cyber security control

Báo Thừa Thiên HuếBáo Thừa Thiên Huế24/07/2023

According to information from the Ministry of Public Security, online fraud in Vietnam currently has 3 main groups (brand counterfeiting, account hijacking and other combined forms) with 24 forms of fraud, such as: "cheap travel combo" fraud; Deepfake, Deepvoice video call fraud; "SIM lock" fraud due to unstandardized subscribers; forged receipts of successful money transfers; impersonating teachers/medical staff to report that relatives are in emergency care; child model recruitment fraud; impersonating financial companies and banks; stealing citizen identification information to borrow credit; fraud of transferring money to the wrong bank account...

The Information Security Department also stated that cyber fraud is carried out by scammers in many different and increasingly sophisticated ways, targeting many groups of people, including the elderly, children, students, workers, office workers, etc.

Although the common goal is to gain trust, steal user information, and then appropriate property, scammers use different forms of enticement for each age group. For example, for the elderly, common scams include: "cheap travel combo" scams; Deepfake video call scams; "SIM lock" scams because subscribers have not been standardized...

Or in the student and youth groups, we can mention forms such as: installing applications, advertising links for gambling, betting, black credit...; financial investment fraud; online collaborator recruitment fraud... This trick makes fraudulent behavior more difficult to identify and detect.

Online fraud not only causes financial losses but also causes many mental consequences, instability in life and other unpredictable dangers. One of the main reasons why fraud in cyberspace is constantly increasing is because social network users do not have a high level of vigilance in identifying online fraud.

Furthermore, users are not fully aware of their rights and obligations in the digital environment, which is inherently risky. In addition, the legal framework for managing social networking platforms in Vietnam has not kept up with reality and there are still many gaps that need to be further improved. On the other hand, the superiority of technology can easily be exploited by bad guys to commit fraud.

To avoid online fraud "traps", we need to add many "filters" in cyberspace, including: perfecting the legal corridor in line with development practices; enhancing coordination between management agencies, service platform providers and social network users; increasing technological solutions to support the detection of suspicious behaviors...

In addition, social network users need to improve their knowledge and be aware of verifying the reliability of the information they receive from the online environment. At the same time, they need to learn the skills of using technology, update themselves with information to be able to identify fraudulent behavior that is happening every day; and report behaviors that show signs of fraud through the hotline of the authorities.

Especially for the elderly (the main target of cybercrime today), it is necessary to be alert and vigilant, not to transfer money and personal information to anyone online. For issues that you do not fully understand, you should consult other family members before making a decision.
