Ms. Tong Thi My Hoa, Vice Chairman of Vinh An Commune People's Committee, said that Mr. Nguyen Manh is one of the farmers who, despite his old age, always spread the spirit of working and striving for a better life in the community. Many local people are amazed, their feet are tired from walking through the garden and fields of Mr. Manh and his wife, with an area of 8,000 square meters of vegetables; 4,000 square meters of lotus; 1,000 square meters of flowers and 1,000 square meters of rice. But each season has its own produce, the vegetables are always fresh and green, the chrysanthemums are as yellow as the sun...

On the "immense" garden area, the couple grows squash, pumpkin, peanuts, green beans, Malabar spinach, sweet potatoes, etc. according to the season. "There is no vegetable that I do not grow" - Old farmer Nguyen Manh smiled again and said that his vegetables are produced in large quantities, are fresh, delicious, and safe, so customers from Vinh Thanh commune come to buy them at the garden. The reason the old farmer diligently starts his day's work at 3am is because in addition to watering the vegetable garden and flower fields, the harvest must also be done and completed at dawn, to ensure freshness, preserve sweetness, and be in time for customers to bring the goods to the early market.

In addition to the seasonal vegetable garden, 2 sao of chrysanthemums (1,000 square meters) also bloom bright yellow all year round. Mr. Manh and his wife sell chrysanthemums twice a month on the full moon and the first day of the lunar month. Each month, the net profit from chrysanthemums ranges from 6-8 million VND. During the Lunar New Year, the couple grows more types of flowers, such as marigolds, gladiolus; some have high economic value such as lilies... The net profit from flowers during the Tet holiday is from 10-15 million VND.

Mr. Manh happily said that over the past 5 years, his family has been one of the households in the area that has received fertilizer support from the project "Chrysanthemum growing model in Vinh An commune" by the Phu Vang District Agricultural Service Center. The lotus field of 4,000 square meters that he and his wife have cultivated for many years has recently received material and fertilizer support from the World Bank FMCR project. Mr. Manh confided that the support and attention from authorities at all levels has made farmers like him more motivated and responsible to work hard in production, both developing the family economy and contributing to the development of the locality.

When we arrived, it was almost dusk, but Mr. Manh was still diligently digging the field and harvesting lotus roots. In years with a good lotus seed harvest, the net profit from lotus will be 7-8 times higher than growing rice. “This year the plants are beautiful, but due to the weather, the water dried up early so there are not many seeds. We are harvesting lotus roots; when digging lotus, we also prepare the soil. Lotus roots cost an average of 30 thousand VND/kg. I have currently harvested nearly 1 ton of roots. This season, the profit from lotus seeds and roots is 3 times higher than that from rice,” said Mr. Manh.

With diligence, hard work, and perseverance, each year the old farmer couple earns nearly 100 million VND in profit from their fields and gardens. The sons of Mr. Manh and his wife, Nguyen Tai and Nguyen Hong Phuc, have started their own families and live in Ha Uc 3 village. They also continue and follow their parents' spirit of hard work, growing lotus, flowers, vegetables, and rice on a total of more than 10,000 square meters, contributing to creating prosperous production areas in the area.
