The recovery of the stock market in the second half of the year helped the asset size of Vietnamese billionaires return to green. Previously, in 2022, all Vietnamese representatives recorded a decrease in assets.
As of the last trading session of the Year of the Cat (February 7), the total assets of the 5 Vietnamese billionaires are estimated at 12 billion USD, an increase of 700 million USD compared to the list published by Forbes in early 2023.
Of which, the three richest billionaires in Vietnam increased their assets by nearly 1 billion USD, with Hoa Phat Chairman Tran Dinh Long having the largest increase from 1.8 to 2.3 billion USD. Vingroup Chairman and Vietjet Air Chairman increased by 200 million USD each. Mr. Tran Ba Duong and Ho Hung Anh each decreased by 100 million USD.
To be included in the list, the method chosen by Forbes is to evaluate the size of an individual's assets based on stock prices and exchange rates.
In the current list, the asset scale of Vingroup Chairman Pham Nhat Vuong is different between the two rankings of Forbes and Bloomberg, due to the calculation related to ownership at VinFast.
At the end of 2023, Bloomberg Billionaires Index updated Mr. Vuong's ownership in VinFast, helping the assets of Vietnam's richest person increase by nearly 6 billion USD. According to the latest data, Vingroup Chairman's assets were assessed by Bloomberg at 7.15 billion USD, down more than 30% compared to the end of last year.
Among Vietnamese billionaires, the Chairman of Hoa Phat has the best asset growth, thanks to the recovery of HPG shares in the second half of 2023.
As of the end of the session on February 7, HPG shares were trading at over VND28,000, up more than 34% compared to the price range a year ago.
Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Masan Group (MSN), appeared on the list of world billionaires in early 2023, but left this list from October 2023, when Masan's stock price fell more than 30% from its peak.
Mr. Quang was recognized as a billionaire in the list published in early 2019, with assets of 1.3 billion USD. 2023 is the second time Mr. Quang has left this list.
