On November 18, Cho Ray Hospital received at least 5 parents who came to the hospital to look for their children, because they received calls from some scammers asking them to transfer money urgently because their children were in emergency care.
On November 18, Mr. Le Minh Hien - head of the social work department of Cho Ray Hospital - said that at least 5 parents had called the hospital to verify information about their children who had an accident and were being treated at the hospital by some strangers.
At 9:30 a.m., a parent (Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh City) ran to Cho Ray Hospital in panic to find his child.
This parent said he received a phone call from an unknown number informing him that his child had a serious accident and asked him to transfer 40 million VND for urgent surgery at the hospital.
Immediately, the hospital's social work staff checked and informed the parents that they would not accept any patients with the information the parents provided.
Soon after, four more parents also came to the hospital for the same reason in a state of anxiety and panic.
However, when checking, there was no information provided by the patient's parents, nor was there any student in emergency this morning.
The above parents have children studying at schools in Go Vap district and an international school in Thu Duc.
The scammers have the exact information of the students and their parents, asking them to transfer 30 - 40 million VND for urgent surgery.
"Fortunately, no parents have transferred money to these phone numbers. We have recorded at least two strange phone numbers calling parents: 0932470093 and 0909880914," said Mr. Hien.
Mr. Hien recommends that when receiving a call from an unknown number with the above content, parents should stay calm and contact the homeroom teacher, school, or call the hospital for verification.
"Cho Ray Hospital always has the motto of saving patients first, everything related to hospital fees will be done later. In emergency cases, the board of directors and department heads decide to perform surgery without waiting for the family to pay the hospital fees. Therefore, parents need to be extremely vigilant," Mr. Hien informed.
Cho Ray Hospital once warned of fraud due to the scenario of a child with a traumatic brain injury.
In March 2023, many parents at an international school in Ho Chi Minh City received calls from strangers informing them that their child had fallen and suffered a traumatic brain injury and was undergoing urgent surgery, asking for money. When they went to the hospital to find their child, they discovered they had been scammed.
This person asked the parents to transfer money so the teacher could pay for the child because it was urgent.
After receiving this information, Mr. MTD (42 years old) and Mr. TMH (51 years old), both living in Thu Duc City, transferred a total of 70 million VND to this person's strange account.
