However, in a new statement, Mr Schumer's office called the report "baseless speculation" and said Mr Schumer only "conveyed his team's views to President Biden on July 13".
Earlier on July 17, US Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff became the 20th Democrat in the US Congress to publicly call on Mr. Biden to withdraw from the race.
"The president told both leaders that as the party's nominee, he plans to win," White House spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement.
President Biden has repeatedly rejected calls from Democrats for him to drop out of the White House race following his poor performance in last month's debate with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Another difficulty for President Biden in this year's White House race is that he has just been diagnosed with COVID-19, which requires him to spend some time in self-isolation and will have to miss some campaign activities.
About 40% of registered Democrats said Mr. Biden should drop his bid for re-election, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that ended on Tuesday. About 65% of registered independents agreed.
