(Dan Tri) - Rated as a 3-star OCOP product, chayote in Hoang Mai town, Nghe An suddenly dropped in price miserably, and growers threw away all over their gardens.
These days, people in Quynh Lien commune, Hoang Mai town (Nghe An) are still working hard in the fields to harvest carrots, chayote and other agricultural products. However, the price of agricultural products has dropped sharply, and some vegetables and tubers have hit rock bottom.
People growing chayote in Quynh Lien commune said that the current price of this fruit is only 200-300 VND/kg, but it is still unsold. Chayote will be harvested after 3 months of planting. If not harvested in time, the fruit will become old, brown, and rotten. If traders do not buy, farmers have to pick it to avoid the trellis collapsing.

Mr. Ho Ngoc Tang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Lien Commune, Hoang Mai Town, said that the sharp decrease in market demand has caused the price of chayote to plummet.
According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Lien Commune, before Tet, chayote was purchased by traders for more than 4,000 VND/kg. However, not long after, the price dropped to 200-300 VND/kg.

"Although the price has dropped very low, it is still difficult to sell. Some households have found a place to sell but only sell a small amount. Some households cannot sell so they pick and throw the crop away in the field," said the Chairman of Quynh Lien commune.
Mr. Tien, a resident of Quynh Lien commune, said that in previous years, chayote had a fairly stable price, bringing in high income. However, this year, before and after Tet, chayote was unsold wherever it was harvested.
''My family grows more than 5 sao of chayote and the fruit is very abundant, estimated at 4-5 tons. This year the price of chayote has dropped so dramatically that we don't know how to cope. Some have to be picked and thrown away on the field on harvest day to avoid collapsing the trellis or the heavy fruit will pull the tree down, affecting the next crop,'' said Mr. Toan.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Oanh, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Quynh Lien Commune, said that the situation of chayote prices falling still happens every year. The reason is that workers are off work, students are off school, so the big markets cannot consume it.
"Before Tet, there was a time when the price of chayote rose to 4,000-5,000 VND/kg, however, from the 23rd of the lunar month, it could not be sold. Some households harvest and preserve the chayote properly so it will not spoil. But if they cut it to the ground and do not collect it for preservation, it will spoil in a short time," said Mr. Oanh.
After a long period of stagnation, on February 14, the price of chayote began to increase again when traders bought it from 300 to 500 VND/kg. However, according to the people, the current price is still very low.
It is known that the whole Quynh Lien commune has more than 350 hectares of vegetable cultivation. Of which, the area for growing chayote is 70 hectares, with a yield of 100-120 tons/ha. In Quynh Lien commune, there are 2 types of vegetables, chayote and carrots, that have achieved the 3-star OCOP brand standard (One Commune One Product Program) in 2023, with high productivity and economic efficiency.
This is also the locality with the largest area of chayote cultivation in Nghe An province, with the highest productivity in the coastal areas of Quynh Luu district and Hoang Mai town. Chayote is an easy-to-grow plant, does not require much care, and has a high resistance to pests and diseases, so its productivity is much higher than other crops.
