On the afternoon of February 18, during a working trip to the Western provinces, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Xuan Sang and a delegation from the Ministry and local Departments of Transport were present on National Highway 53 to inspect the scene.
From the starting point of National Highway 53 in Vinh Long city, Vinh Long province, the delegation headed towards Tra Vinh and stopped on the highway in Tan An Luong commune, Vung Liem district, Vinh Long province.

After listening to the units reporting on plans to expand and upgrade National Highway 53, the Deputy Minister reminded the units and localities about the site clearance work for the project, plans to build new and expand bridges on the route.
Previously, the Government approved the project to upgrade and renovate three national highways in the Mekong Delta, including National Highway 53 connecting Vinh Long and Tra Vinh, with a total investment of more than VND2,617 billion.
For National Highway 53, the planned expansion range is from Km 11+295 in Long An commune, Long Ho district, Vinh Long province, the expected end point is at Km 56+180 in Phuong Thanh commune, Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province.
The total length of the route is 41km, of which the section through Vinh Long is 25km long and the section through Tra Vinh is 16km long.

The project will upgrade and renovate to meet the standards of a grade III plain road, with a design speed of 80km/h. The road surface is 11m wide, including two lanes for motor vehicles and two lanes for non-motor vehicles. Some sections through urban areas, towns and townships have ensured that the scale will remain the same.
Notably, this project will build a bypass route, expected from Km 23+300 - Km 46+325 (avoiding Vung Liem town, Vung Liem district, Vinh Long province and Cang Long town, Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province). The length of the bypass route is 17km, 5km shorter than the old route.
After the inspection at National Highway 53, the working delegation led by Deputy Minister Nguyen Xuan Sang continued to move to Lai Vung district, Dong Thap province to inspect the site for the Muong Khai - Doc Phu Hien canal upgrade project.

Previously, at the end of 2023, the Ministry of Transport assigned the Waterway Project Management Board to prepare a report and pre-feasibility study for the project to upgrade this canal.
The Muong Khai - Doc Phu Hien Canal passes through Lai Vung, Chau Thanh districts and Sa Dec city of Dong Thap. This is the shortest waterway connecting the Tien and Hau rivers.
However, the current state of the canal is 25 - 40m wide but less than 2m shallow, with many curved and narrow sections, and a bridge clearance of less than 3.5m, making it difficult for large ships to navigate.
The estimated cost for this project is over VND2,270 billion. After upgrading, this canal will meet the standards of a level 3 canal - inland waterway.
The project will help shorten the distance between Tien River and Hau River to 20km, and 45km closer from Sa Dec port to Cai Cui port of Can Tho city, estimated to reduce 30% of transportation costs.
