Quy Nhon channel upgrade coming soon

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông29/05/2024

According to the Maritime Project Management Board, the Quy Nhon navigation channel upgrade project is completing environmental procedures to start construction soon. The project has completed the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure and has been submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for approval.

Investment project to build and upgrade Quy Nhon channel for 50,000 DWT ships to expand the channel with a length of 7km, width of 140m, and bottom elevation of the channel (-13m).

"Only after the EIA is approved can the investment project be established and the next steps be implemented. If the EIA can be approved soon, the project can start construction in 2024," informed the leader of the Maritime Project Management Board.

Mr. Ho Lien Nam, Deputy General Director of Quy Nhon Port Joint Stock Company, said that in the coming time, the port will maintain the water area in front of berths 2, 3, 4, and 5 to be able to receive fully loaded 50,000 DWT ships.

"However, the shipping channel has not been upgraded and currently does not meet the original standard of -11m. This affects the port's operations and efficiency. Large ships cannot enter, which also reduces shipping fees and charges," said Mr. Nam.

According to the leader of Quy Nhon Port, the domestic and international shipping market continues to increase the size of ships to optimize time and save costs. The number of cargo ships arriving at seaports in general, Quy Nhon Port in particular, to pick up/drop off goods tends to decrease in number but increase in total capacity and tonnage of ships to increase the volume of transport but reduce shipping costs and import-export logistics costs.

At Quy Nhon Port, the demand for exploiting 50,000 DWT fully loaded and 70,000 DWT partially loaded ships to transport import and export goods such as containers, coiled steel, wood chips, compressed wood pellets, mineral ores, equipment (accounting for 85% of total output through the port) of cargo owners and ship owners is very large and practical.

For goods with large and stable sources of goods through ports in Group 2 and 3, cargo owners and ship owners often use a fixed fleet to take turns transporting and receiving and returning goods at the ports.

Currently, the container cargo throughput through Quy Nhon port is about 150,000 - 200,000 TEU/year. Shipping lines' service routes often call at ports from the Northern region to Quy Nhon before going abroad.

"However, the restriction on receiving ships due to limitations on ship tonnage, ship length, and navigational draft on the channel has led to the inability to receive large tonnage ships. Meanwhile, Quy Nhon port is the final destination of the ship's journey before leaving Vietnam, so there are often cases where ships have to reduce their load from the adjacent port first or reduce Quy Nhon cargo, or even skip the trip to Quy Nhon," said Mr. Nam.

In addition, service routes connecting to mother ships at Hubs such as Cai Mep - Thi Vai, Singapore, Hong Kong, financial routes need to exploit Feeders with a length of over 200m to increase transport volume, run longer routes, reduce costs, currently can stop at Hai Phong, Da Nang but cannot stop at Quy Nhon to receive and deliver goods.

The fixed bulk fleet also has a large tonnage of about 50,000DWT, often serving the transportation of wood chips, wood pellets, and rolled sheet metal at some ports in Group 2 and 3 of seaports that can dock at Quy Nhon port to receive and deliver goods. However, only berth 4 of the port is allowed to receive ships.

"At peak times, the number of ships coming to pick up/drop off goods is high. The situation of waiting for bridges for many days leads to losses for cargo owners, ship owners, and wastes resources of import-export enterprises and port enterprises," said the leader of Quy Nhon port.

In particular, Quy Nhon port has been permitted by the Vietnam Maritime Administration to put into operation berth No. 1 after completing the investment and upgrading. Berth No. 1 has a water depth of -12.2m in front of the berth, the berth structure is designed to receive ships with a tonnage of up to 50,000 DWT. The conditions of navigation channels, pilotage capacity, tugboat capacity, human resources, loading and unloading equipment... have basically met the requirements.

Therefore, this enterprise believes that if the project invests in the construction of the Quy Nhon waterway renovation and upgrade according to the design, it will improve the capacity to receive ships and goods through the port. From there, it will contribute to the socio-economic development of Binh Dinh province and the Central Highlands region.

The project to invest in the construction of the Quy Nhon channel renovation and upgrade project for 50,000 DWT ships aims to renovate the Quy Nhon maritime channel and turning basin for ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT, with a total investment of more than 700 billion VND.

The project aims to renovate and expand the channel with a length of 7km, a width of 140m, and a channel bottom elevation of (-13m). The estimated dredging volume is about 3.05 million m3, meeting the cargo transit needs of the area.
