At the match between Song Lam Nghe An Club (SLNA Club) and Ho Chi Minh City Club (HCMC Club) in round 17 of V-League 2024/2025 on the evening of April 6, the Southern Song Lam Nghe An Supporters' Association organized a ceremony to honor this important milestone in the nation's history by covering the stands with 3,000 flags of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam during the pre-match flag-raising ceremony.
More than 1,000 fans from Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc and neighboring areas did not hesitate to travel far to Thong Nhat Stadium (HCMC) to support SLNA Club. SLNA Fan Club is considered one of the most enthusiastic and largest fan clubs in Vietnam.
Before the match, the fan club arranged a logistics team of nearly 50 people to help distribute flags to the audience before the flag-raising ceremony took place. According to Mr. Truong Thanh Tung - Vice President of the SLNA fan club in the Southern region, the club had prepared for this special welcome two months before the match took place.
In addition to thousands of flags, this is the first time the SLNA fan club has printed hundreds of photos of Uncle Ho and General Vo Nguyen Giap to distribute to each fan during the match. In particular, there is a 40m² banner with the words "Welcome to the 50th anniversary of national reunification" hanging in the middle of the D stand - where SLNA fans gather.
Nghe An fans sang the national anthem and raised thousands of flags of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam in the stands of Thong Nhat Stadium.
"We hope to not only bring enthusiastic cheers for our hometown team but also spread the spirit of solidarity and patriotism to everyone. Raising 3,000 flags not only shows national pride but is also a way for us to pay tribute to previous generations who sacrificed for peace and national unification," said Mr. Nguyen Duc Hieu - Executive Board of Song Lam Nghe An Southern Fans Association.
Although playing away, the yellow SLNA jersey still filled the stands of Thong Nhat Stadium, lighting up a passionate atmosphere, filled with love forfootball and pride for the homeland. Through the cheering program, the Nghe An community living far from home can express their love for their homeland and country and positively inspire the youth.
During the match, there is a coordinator who leads the singing, slogans, and regulates activities such as shouting, clapping, hanging banners, etc. to create a vibrant atmosphere and maintain solidarity in the stands.
Although SLNA is at the bottom of the table, thousands of fans still cheered for the Nghe An team to play steadily. The enthusiasm in the stands is the motivation for SLNA to play their best and achieve the goal of staying in the league this season.
This cheering program not only helps to boost the spirit of Song Lam Nghe An Club in difficult times, but is also an opportunity for the Nghe An community far from home to show their solidarity and gratitude to the history of the nation. The thorough preparation, scale and enthusiastic cheering spirit of the Fan Club have created a beautiful image, leaving a strong impression in round 17 of V-League 2024/2025.
Responding to fans' expectations, coach Phan Nhu Thuat's team had a fair match with Ho Chi Minh City FC despite playing away. In the 53rd minute, after Ho Chi Minh City's center-back Adriano Schmidt touched the ball with his hand, foreign player Michael Olaha successfully took advantage of the penalty spot to open the score for the Nghe An team.
This was an important match in the relegation race of both teams. After 90 minutes of play, the match ended with a score of 1-1. Despite taking the lead, SLNA still let the tie break through a header by foreign player Duarte Matheus.
The flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam has a yellow star on a red and blue background. Meaning: the upper half (red) represents the North which has become independent. The lower half (blue) symbolizes the South which has not yet become independent, still under the domination of American imperialism and the Ngo Dinh Diem government. After the country was unified, in 1976 a general election was held to elect the National Assembly; the National Assembly established the State, the Government, unified, and at the same time decided to change the country's name to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and chose the red flag with a yellow star as the official national flag of Vietnam. That shows that the two regions of the South and the North have been unified, the country has been reunited.
