Green and sustainable development has become a trend of the times, a strategic orientation to maintain competitiveness as well as ensure long-term development of economies. Many important policies such as the European Green Deal, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the Circular Economy Action Plan or the Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 are having a great influence on the method of growth, economic cooperation, trade and global investment.

Vietnamese export enterprises need to soon implement green transformation in production to meet the EU's EGD.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, regulations on sustainable development have actually existed before, but have now been standardized more strictly, becoming mandatory regulations in many markets, especially Europe. Enterprises wishing to export to these markets need to prepare quickly and carefully to be able to meet the requirements related to green transformation. This transformation helps enterprises minimize the risks of being eliminated from important export markets, while creating opportunities to build sustainable brands, enhance product value and reach high-end customer segments in the world. This is also a strategic step for Vietnamese enterprises to consolidate their position in the value chain, reduce negative impacts on the environment, improve competitiveness, contribute to enhancing the national position, and realize the Government's commitment to global sustainable development goals.

According to government regulations, more than 2,000 domestic enterprises will have to report on greenhouse gas emissions by March 2025 as well as develop plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, according to a survey, only about 10% of enterprises are ready to do this. Meanwhile, from January 1, 2025, Vietnamese enterprises wishing to export agricultural products to some key markets will have to prove that their goods do not generate emissions. In addition, there are many other requirements related to green production and if enterprises are not well prepared, the possibility of being eliminated from the game is very high.

Therefore, in the coming time, Vietnamese enterprises need to be more proactive in understanding the requirements and regulations on green standards of other countries; proactively improve the capacity to absorb green finance as well as increase the use of green technologies to meet the requirements of transitioning to sustainable production. State management agencies need to design technical support programs and improve the capacity of enterprises and associations to comply with competition regulations for sustainable development.
