Mr. Le Van Van, village 2, Tan Lap commune, Kon Ray district (Kon Tum province) has succeeded with the model of raising rat snakes - a wild animal that is likened to "a small animal that eats little and gives birth to many". Raising rat snakes has brought in hundreds of millions of dong in income each year for Mr. Van's family.

Mr. Van was born and raised in the plains of Vinh Tuong district (Vinh Phuc province). In 1996, he and many people in the village went to Kon Tum to do new economic activities.

Currently, Mr. Van's snake breeding model has about 450 small snakes and 200 breeding snakes.

Mr. Van was granted 1000m2 of residential land and garden land by the State. After that, Mr. Van worked hard, saved, and borrowed more money to expand the cultivated land area to 5ha.

At first, Mr. Van planted coffee and rubber trees to develop the economy. After the coffee and rubber entered the harvest season, Mr. Van saved up money to invest in raising cows and goats, but it was not effective, so he continued to look for other livestock.

After researching, Mr. Van found that raising snakes was relatively easy, suitable for the locality and also brought high income, so he boldly invested.

Mr. Van confided: "In my hometown, this model of raising snakes is very popular, especially because it brings in high income compared to raising cows and goats.

Furthermore, I have a friend in Dak Lak province who is doing this model and has a very high income, so I decided to use my savings to buy more than 100 breeding snakes to test.

Mr. Van's snake farm is only about 50 square meters with more than 90 cages, each cage is about 0.5 square meters in area and 0.8 meters in height.

Snake eggs cost 70,000 VND/egg.

The most difficult time was in the first year, because of lack of experience and care techniques, the snakes often got sick and weak, leading to continuous loss of the herd.

Besides, food sources are scarce, because the rat snake is a wild animal that specializes in eating live prey in the wild.

Therefore, he had to find and buy live prey from local people such as: toads, frogs, frogs... to feed the snakes. However, this way of caring for the snakes only lasted for a while, the natural food source gradually dried up, especially in the dry season when there was no prey for the snakes to eat.

Through experience, Mr. Van continued to implement the frog farming model to provide food for snakes. Mr. Van immediately built a frog farm with a total area of 100m2, divided into many cages.

Along with that, he bought more chicken and duck food to freeze for the snakes to eat gradually. On average, a snake eats about 70,000 VND worth of food each year.

Holding a 1 meter long, 3 kg heavy rat snake in his hand, Mr. Van said this is a very benign and non-venomous snake.

From the baby snake, after raising for about 1 year, it will reach a weight of about 2kg, this is the time to sell the snake or raise it to lay eggs.

The selling price of an adult snake ranges from 400,000 VND to 700,000 VND/kg. The price of a snake egg ranges from 70,000 VND to 100,000 VND/egg. For breeding snakes, the price is about 200,000 VND/head.

For commercial snakes, Mr. Van often imports them back to his hometown for consumption; snake eggs and breeding snakes are sold to other provinces.

After 5 years of raising, Mr. Van has about 450 small snakes, 200 breeding snakes, bringing in an income of about 300 million VND per year.

Mr. Van said: "In the coming time, I will continue to expand the area of my snake farm to increase the number of breeding and commercial snakes, bringing in higher income."

Snake meat costs from 400,000 to 700,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Lap commune (Kon Ray district, Kon Tum province) assessed Mr. Le Van Van as a diligent member, willing to learn, knowing how to take advantage of knowledge to boldly convert and develop livestock with high economic value.

Mr. Van's snake breeding model has developed very stably in recent years, bringing in high income. Over the years, the Farmers' Association has tried to connect and find outlets in the market so that Mr. Van's snake breeding model can develop further.
