"The South Korean government is committed to pursuing uninterrupted diplomatic and security policies and continuing to strengthen the South Korea-US alliance," the office of South Korean acting President Han Duck-soo said in a statement on December 15.

The announcement came after Han had a 16-minute phone call with US President Joe Biden on December 15. During the call, Han stressed the importance of strengthening the South Korea-US joint defense posture in the face of common challenges, such as the nuclear threat from North Korea and deepening cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

He also emphasized that all state affairs will be strictly conducted in accordance with the Constitution and laws.

President Biden expressed his appreciation and confidence in South Korea's democracy, noting the country's resilience.

The South Korean acting presidential office said that during the phone call, Mr. Biden affirmed the unwavering commitment of the US-South Korea alliance. "The strong South Korea-US alliance remains unchanged and he will continue to cooperate with the South Korean side for development," Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Han thanked Mr. Biden for his interest and efforts in developing the bilateral alliance and trilateral cooperation with Japan during his term. Accordingly, President Biden pledged to continue supporting the development of the alliance.

The phone call took place after South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached and suspended from all positions. Earlier, on December 14, the South Korean National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol with 204 lawmakers in favor of impeachment, 85 against, 3 abstaining and 8 invalid votes.

Accordingly, President Yoon is suspended from office while the Constitutional Court issues its ruling and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will assume the role of interim president. The court has 180 days to make a decision on Mr. Yoon's future.

This is the third time South Korea has had a sitting president impeached since 1987, after Roh Moo-hyun in 2004 and Park Geun-hye in 2016.
