Phu Yen provincial leaders proposed that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment create conditions for the early establishment of a UNESCO Global Geopark in the province.

On the afternoon of March 14, working with Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh, Ms. Ho Thi Nguyen Thao - Vice Chairman of Phu Yen Provincial People's Committee - said that the province is currently focusing on building the Phu Yen Geopark project towards the title of UNESCO Global Geopark. According to Ms. Thao, the area planned to establish this park is located in 7/9 districts, towns and cities of the province including: Tuy Hoa city, Dong Hoa town, Song Cau town and Tuy An, Son Hoa, Phu Hoa, Tay Hoa districts, focusing on the area of Ganh Da Dia. Through the survey, Phu Yen has 60 geological heritages, belonging to 9 types and the value of geological heritage in Phu Yen is the scientific basis for building Phu Yen Geopark and beyond. Phu Yen Geopark will include three main scientific values: geological heritage value, cultural and historical heritage value and biodiversity value. Vice Chairwoman of Phu Yen Provincial People's Committee Ho Thi Nguyen Thao affirmed that through surveys and organizing many preliminary conferences and workshops, Phu Yen is fully capable of meeting the criteria for a Global Geopark. According to Ms. Thao, the Ministry of Science and Technology has recently accepted the national independent project "Research and assessment of the value of geological heritage and other heritages as a scientific basis for the establishment of a UNESCO Global Geopark in Phu Yen province". "This is the scientific basis for Phu Yen to establish a Geopark and prepare a dossier to submit to UNESCO for recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark. I request the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to create conditions for the formation of Phu Yen Geopark towards the title of UNESCO Global Geopark, at the same time support the province to complete the dossier to apply for recognition as a National Geopark and participate in the activities of the Global Geopark network" - Ms. Thao said. Responding to the above proposal, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh said that building a Geopark requires preserving and developing the environmental landscape, while protecting biodiversity. According to Mr. Khanh, the UNESCO Global Geopark will be a key tourism product, a distinct highlight among Phu Yen’s tourism products. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is ready to support and create conditions for the province to soon form a Global Geopark.
